    Do you power condition?

All this thread is reminding me of is how contextual things are. I have solar - It initially impacted my sound, but that was because of a poorly wired heat pump. Once that was sorted, it was fine. I have more than one PS Audio Regenerator. It made a difference on one of my systems, but not...

    Wolverine Slow Build

...slow build... Apart from not having much time, I am waiting for some matched transistor pairs to arrive from various parts of the world. In the meantime, I decided to change the orientation of the boards on the heatsinks. I have switched my method for mounting heatsinks. More than once, I...

Solar back up power and hifi/AV

From my experience: It didn’t make a night and day difference, and whatever difference it did make was quickly normalised. I also have to say that I didn’t notice a difference with my testing and measurement equipment in my workshop. So I still notice similar stuff in the audio band. My home is...

    Linn Sekrit in wall Loudspeakers

Actually, there is a cheaper way of measuring speakers. It’s not Dats, but it will give you an idea of speaker parameters.

Next up was some work on the chassis. Really a case of measure twice (times 100 in Autodesk) mount once. For the back, I found an interesting speaker protect on Audiophonics, which I ended up modifying slightly. Then onto mounting the PSUs on their brackets. I also mounted a Sonoff POW...

    Wolverine Slow Build

I had a little time and started the boards. I realised I haven't actually posted anything about the Wolverine for those who haven't followed the Diyaudio thread, here are the details: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/diy-class-a-b-amp-the-wolverine-build-thread.385920/ Anyway, the...

    Wolverine Slow Build

Again, some weekend work. I did a quick dry fit of the powder-coated chassis; it's looking surprisingly good. I didn't have much time outside of Sunday Afternoon, which I spent working on part of the face. Thought I might document that because it is a technique I have used to replace wooden amp...

New Tidal HiRes (Max tracks) vs Roon (@CD level)?

As far as I know Tidal is ditching MQA systematically. I’ve noticed that a few of the albums in my favourites have switched from MQA to FLAC.

    Wolverine Slow Build

This was some work from last weekend. Tapping heatsinks and fitting heatsinks to installation brackets. Then making PCB mounted heatsinks. All I can say is thank the lord for spiral flute taps. What a pleasure for blind tapping

I struggled to find ICEpower from an accessible source, but I agree it is very well-regarded. Yes, Connex is pretty much low on the list but seemingly better than Meanwell. I suppose then Connex is acceptable for one-off builds. Where you don't need OEM consistency, they are fine.

It's MicroAudio, Sami is the owner. https://micro-audio.com/store/product-category/switching-power-supplies/ I am pretty sure he can do OEM, the chip shortage is impacting everyone though. So, I read a lot of reviews, it seems in terms of general sentiment on DiyAudio they are well recommended...

    Wolverine Slow Build

Microaudio SMPs arrived all the way from Jordan. Honestly, Jordan is a first for shipping origin for me, but Sami does make good PSUs. The quailty and parts are all of the highest standard. Aramex and customs made these a super fun experience. These are the SMPS600 frame, but with...

    Wolverine Slow Build

This is going to be a cross-post slow build. Life is unpredictable and doesn’t allow a whole weekend of building anymore. I usually don’t publish build progress; I publish the entire build. I’m doing it this way because I’ve just noticed a general slowdown in DIY projects, so I am hoping...

Switched mode power supplies vs Buck converters

There are also a variety of ways to lessen the effect of ripple noise. The ripple eater is one, the other is something I have played with from the diyaudiostore https://diyaudiostore.com/collections/kits-power-supply/products/smps-dc-filter-p089zb-kit I used it on the Korg b1 preamp when I...

    FdlSys - Sad news

I can’t believe this, we had a drink together after the record fair last month, went round to his place after and chatted about a new design I was working on. And just went on our typical topic flow of anything that popped into our heads. I’m going to miss him so much. A real kindred spirit in...

12 Predictions for the future of music

Arguably it's much easier for an artist to create a market these days with social media. A huge proportion of the new generation of comedians and musicians actually get their start through Social Media. Lana Del Ray owes the start of her career to YouTube. Some of the new crop of Saturday Night...

12 Predictions for the future of music

AI is an innovation by recombination, but not an original innovation. So, put simply, AI can recreate an artwork, but it would struggle to invent the conceptual foundation for a convincing* art movement. It is a recursive algorithm trained on historical patterns, built to check the validity of...

The 10 most common audio formats, which one to use?

I can’t remember why, but I did a whole bunch of research on compression a while back. I think I had just amassed too many large files and I wanted to archive it and then compress the things I didn’t listen to that much anymore. Long and short, I chose to compress music in FLAC at 24 or 32-bit...
