I am sitting with the exact same predicament....my rugrat will be 10 months  in 2 weeks. Getting perspex cut to size will work. I am assuming the rack is made of metal? Maybe get some neodymium magnets to stick on the perspex. This will keep them in place when not in use and will be easy enough...
