    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

And fits bang on, its recessed deeper than on the original faceplate, I like that.. Counter bezel screwed down, the new display chips are less bright than the previous lot so in all probability I am going to cut a new window in red perspex.. Need more capscrews, that will make the nut & bolt...

Ok, I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, which is where I need to be extra careful 'cause this is when things generally go pear shape... Last cut on the faceplate - milled the opening for the tape splicing block..

Revox B77 REAL time digital counter conversion - part 1 - the mechanicals..

Thank you Swindlehurstguy, yes, I am my own worst enemy, I love working on these machines, I hate the mess they make, I probably clean them 5 times a day when I am working on them, its an OCD thing.. my wastepaper usage will compliment a small forests sacrifice... But.. there are some dings...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

Thanks Den, must admit I had a respectful chuckle when I read your ?what chip? question, yes nowadays you can easily make this out of one chip and a good bit of programming, problem is I know jack about programming... No, some 30 years ago I drew up this design for my RS-1500, and it is all...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

And here she is all fired up.., you can see the negative symbol on the display from rewind past zero... I still need to fit the display bezel with the reset & return to zero button, the tape slicer block is also in the 'need to fit" mix.. Obviously it looks a little grungy because she's dirty...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

Trimmed the reel size and tape speed pushbutton 2mm in order to reduce stickout, their respective switches shafts were also shortened in order to allow the 2mm drop in height. the speed control pot shaft had to have something like 8mm removed from its length, and a new flat seat ground on the...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

Ok, back to the milling machine, drilling the holes for the reel size switch, tape speed switch and speed controller pot, then opening the digital counter window and trimming of the sides to bring the faceplate to final width..

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

In case you are unsure of it all, here a pic of the B77 without the faceplate, you can see the "step" between the front panel chassis and the front of the electronics panel..

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

Then with that to the side moved on to "lifting" the front chassis from the side chassis which contains the electronics panel, 25mm, thereby bringing things reasonably in line.. A ton of behind the scenes machining ensued in order to make sure fit was proper and everything cleared as it should...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

And since things were gradually opening up lockdown wise, I had ordered and took collection of some Aluminium, the big round chunky bits will eventually become more OTARI NAB adapters like the ones I made a few months back.., the flat plate will become my new faceplate, and the square solid...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

So while I had built the digital counter for my B77 on the previous thread, I was not completely happy with it.. Firstly, I did not like the physical 7 segment chips themselves... they were cheap, and looked it... Secondly, there were 5 segments, namely H:MM:SS, which is fine, until you rewind...

    Flat faced Revox B77 conversion

So yes, a ever continuous continuation of my B77 destruction... So I like this, nevermind the green, just I like the look of the 99, it makes me warm in all the right places.. its what all B77's should have looked like from the getgo, if ol' Willie Studer had a way to have seen in the future...
