    Hifi Expo and SA

My thoughts exactly.  I think my friends Levinsons are dull and retiring, and he has some words to say about Krells.  Doesnt mean that we dont really like our own systems though, and listening to his kind of music, on his system I can understand why he loves the Levinsons.  I just dont.  Unless...

    Hifi Expo and SA

If I wanted strippers I would hire them myself.  Just found the vast majority of the equipment was lower/middle range.  For that I ask my supplier to recomend a few items, listen to them and buy (hearing what was there they are not cheating me in any way too).  Was hopeing more allong the lines...

    Hifi Expo and SA

I visited the show and was very bored. Not to be cynical, but perhaps Sonor Audio was so packed because people were hoping that there would be a cheaper alternative to the large price imports? That said, never heard any sound from the Sonor Audio boys, while the B&W's were always running.  So...

    Looking for speakers.

I see Rieghard at HFX in Pretoria has some 603S3's in for R5590. http://www.hfxsystems.com/pre_owned.asp I tend to buy most of my stuff from HFX these days and can recomend them highly.

    Issues with Off Axis Listening...

Mine are more than fine.  But then I am probably running them off slightly more stereo related equipment than you (Theta into a little Aura with Marantz monoblocks).

    Power consumption versus output power

Actually disagree on the MP3 thing.  While the main system at home is top class, and the car system (well in the big car at least) is stunning to say the least, I am quite content to listen to my MP3's on any system.  I love the music, not the machinery.  If I have the choice of a CD on the...

    Power consumption versus output power

Oh yes.  Had that too - its ugly, and why cant we hide the amps behind the couchs where at least they will keep the people warm.  I kept a straight face, and pointed out that I am living in a pastel pink bedroom and didnt complain. Needless to say that relationship did not last that long.

    Power consumption versus output power

Well its easier to persuade she who must be obeyed that one component is cheaper than three.

    Power consumption versus output power

Yes.  Was told by a friend that my nice big amps are hopeless, as her HT system (all R4000 of it) is much more powerfull. Some explaining was in order...

    Power consumption versus output power

100%.  How many times have I seen amps (sometimes even from good companies) that are rated the same W RMS as my big amps (OK not quite the same accuracy I agree) and laughed.  I mean, the puny little things weigh 10-30kgs, and you can probably run them off ripcord.   The current on the big amps...

    new TV: 5k-10k range

Hardly, with the mods to my race car and my new road car cash is tight at the moment.  Thus no money wasted on fancy equipment. Hate this living to a budget thing.  Need to win the lotto.  The UK one, and a few times a year at that!

Top 10 albums of all time

Oh well.  Here goes any credibility I might have had: 1) B52's - Cosmic Thing. 2) Prefab Sprout - Jordan - the Comback. 3) Queen - The Works. 4) R.E.M. - Automatic for the people 5) Deacon Blue - When the world knows your name. 6) Thomas Dolby - Astronaughts and Heretics. Will stop there...

    new TV: 5k-10k range

And off to Makro I go.  Thanks.  I cant cope with my old tiny TV anymore.  My eyes are not what they used to be.

Matching components - by absolute performance or by badge?

Only one system of mine has matching components. Otherwise I buy what I decide will go nicely, and really dont care what something looks like.

Re: Links for newcomers to home cinema

Thanks.  For some reason I missed your post.  And I hadnt even been drinking then. NADs will not have space in my house.  I loved the old Rotels.  Have a 865 (think thats the one) that I use as a tranport.  Wonderfull machine. Closer to the time I will start bugging people again, at least I...

Re: Links for newcomers to home cinema

Its fine - am always off topic.   Will look at the links during the day (busy today   :| ).  Will probably end up spending more and going the Lexicon route.  Probably find a traded in one for R30Kish.

Re: Links for newcomers to home cinema

mmm.  Most of my knowledge (very little) is in stereo equipment - so this will come in handy. Can you get decent recievers for reasonable amounts (ie.  Under R15K)?  Because I will in the end hook that up to the multiple Marantz monoblocks rather than buy a single 6 channel amp.

    Review : JVC RX5032 V Reciever

Its the room where I listen to most of my music in, so I can believe it. tptb  <---- trying to justify the electronics that also sit in his bedroom.

Buying used B&W speakers - warranty and other considerations?

Never noticed.  Not really worried.  Bought from HFX and there service is brilliant.

    B&W 800 series DVD

And a nice room to run them in.  I think when the time comes to fiddle with the big system 801's are the answer.
