I remember the Hitachi Deathstar all too well.  Have also had WD, Maxtor and Seagate fail me in the past. Changed over to all Samsung around five years ago and have yet to have a drive bugger out on me.  The (HD103UJ) 1TB drives are also the coolest running and quietest 1TB drives I've ever had...

Also haven't heard one in action, but have heard good things. Been looking at Firestone Audio for a small listening rig in the bedroom. So, far the only local source I've found is Emia Distribution.  If you know of any other, please let me know.

I'd audition that. With regards to the cans..., way too feminine looking for my tastes.  :P

If it's comfort you after, look into the Beyerdynamic DT 800\900 series. I impulsively got a pair last week for my travels.  Great cans, but not so friendly to eyeglass wearers or at least I can't wear my current pair of glasses with these as they really wrench down around the ears.

I've got the FiiO E7. You really can't compare the E5 to E7, but for your purpose I think the E5 would do you just fine.  

Do have a look around the more reputable audio stores as well, I'm sure you can get it for even cheaper or as "LAV" mentioned, have one made up locally.

If you are considering buying through wantitall, rather have a look at take2.  They offer the same service, less the ludicrous markup.  ;)
