The Pioneer you mentioned is a good start. It will allow you to later add a center and rear speakers for a 5.1 set up. For now, go with that Pioneer avr and look for a decent set of bookshelf speakers here on the classifieds.

I wouldn't recommend that. You'll be better off starting with a 2.1 (meaning a pair of speakers in stereo and a sub). You can pick up a decent paid of second hand B&W 685's for around R3500, add an amp for around that price too, then save up for a sub and you'll have a great starter system...
