Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

A pic with her and a few of her cousins. She is at the bottom of the pile. Above her is an absolutely pristine '75 JMP50 Lead spec that belongs to a friend of mine, that was visiting for some TLC, and on top is my '69 JMP50 small box.

Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

Completed my usual startup procedure for amps that haven't been powered for a long period, including reforming the main electrolytics. I checked the onboard electrolytics for signs of physical leaks and couldn't see anything. Bias circuit was providing stable bias voltage. Once I was satisfied...

Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

Front view, now sporting the replacement input jacks as well as a full set of vintage knobs: Fortunately both the front and rear plexi panels are both in exceptionally good condition, with no cracks, or oxidisation of the gold paint.

Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

Casting our eyes further to the left, we are greeted with this sight: Most of the solder joints still contain the red dye Marshall originally marked them with. This amp is one of only a few that I have seen with Cornell Dubilier  caps instead of the regular mustards one usually sees. The...

Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

The first thing that got removed was that popped capacitor. It shouldn't have been there in the first place. Now that it's gone, lets take a look at the rest of the circuit: You'll also note that in this pic, I had replaced that horrible blue Neutrik Powercon socket with a NOS Bulgin socket...

Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

Some circuitry weirdness: I can't understand why someone would have fitted this capacitor between the power selector and ground, but at some stage of its life, it went Boooom!

Vintage '68 Marshall Super Tremolo Plexi Guitar Amp Restoration

Hey Guys, Been a while since I've visited here. Since you guys enjoyed my first post detailing some of my guitar amp restores/builds, I thought I'd share my latest one with you. I bought this amp a couple of weeks ago. It was in pretty good shape for something nearly 50 years old, but did need...

    A Head's Up for all the tube-heads

Morning gents. I'm the one who is selling those valves. The ones in the list are the ones I have sorted through. There is still a large box that I haven't sorted through and listed. If anyone has any questions or specific requirements, I am happy to try to answer or assist.

Hi Gents, Well, I still haven't gotten to 50 posts to be able to post my valves for sale in the Classifieds of this site, and I don't really know what else to tell you all. I have posted a Gumtree advert, and hopefully you all would consider me having paid my dues and allow me to post this link...

Hi! I wouldn't have the faintest clue what that is or how to restore it!  ;)

Greetings from a guitar amp enthusiast

Hi Andre, I'd say the initial build took me about a week, working quite late in the evenings after work. There was no kit available for that particular amp, so I sourced parts from all over the place. There are many other amps that are available in kit form which should simplify things and...

Hi Andre, Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately the amp is no longer in my possession. I sold it about a year ago since I felt that the 50W sounded very similar clean, and was more versatile. I have been regretting its sale recently though, hence looking over the photos I took of it.

After these relatively minor repairs and restoration, she was working perfectly and sounded wonderful. After a good cleaning here's what she looked like.

Some of the 10k 1w carbon comp resistors replaced with original NOS ones. Incorrect electrolytic caps replaced with correct value multi cap as was period correct, and cathode capacitor and resistor replaced.

Greetings from a guitar amp enthusiast

I wanted to restore this amp to 100% original, so I ordered some parts off eBay and got to work.

Greetings from a guitar amp enthusiast

The old Bakelite Bulgin power socket had obviously broken at some stage and a piece of cable, looking like it came from an electric lawnmower had been hard wired in its place. I also noticed a couple of the electrolytics had been replaced, as well as a couple of resistors, including the cathode...

Greetings from a guitar amp enthusiast

The tag on top of the chassis dated the amp to 1969. Coincidentally my 50w is also a '69 and these 2 are exactly 100 serial numbers apart.
