I need a new pair of car speakers - advice sought.

You will have to use ( or make spacers ) to fit decent speakers in a Foresters doors as shown ( 2008 XT ). The OEM's are extremely shallow with a minute magnet.

Your Avatar....what is it and why is it your choice ?

I'm a sound recordist, so this is some of my gear being looked after by a prop we had on set a few years ago.

Speakers not used in many years

Just dirt. should be fine. Suck out the dust caps with a vacuum cleaner.

I need a new pair of car speakers - advice sought.

Any decent brand will be fine. Remove the old ones first so you buy the correct size and depth. They might need spacers made. my Forester 2008 needed them. They are built into the OEM speakers, but you might have to make them out of wood if your model needs them. Check the amount of depth you...

    Aesthetic refurbishing of NAD amp

If those are the only area's that need fixing, I would go the scratch repair route first, rather than a respray. I bit tricky around the logo, but it can be done. Get a few model paints to blend to get the correct colour . I would still give the cover the full respray though. Good luck.

Any competent mechanics on the forum ?

I'm not spending another cent. Either it runs or it's sold as scrap. It's not financially viable to get a professional to repair it. Pity, I have to get my son a car, and we're tight on parking as it is. Cranked over this afternoon and it is an interference engine, so the cams had to come out...

    Aesthetic refurbishing of NAD amp

;D Those pics are somewhere backed up on an external drive, so will have to dig when I have a gap. Anyway. Another tip, if you have to touch up with a brush and have no option to spray the entire panel, use model paints ( Humbrol or similar ). You can mix and match to get the correct colour and...

    Tip for Speakers on Stands

That's very expensive for Velcro. Weight doesn't really matter as you are not using it for support, but rather as a sandwich beween the speaker and stand. Dual lock ( Velcro ) would be better, as it locks the speaker to the stand better if it accidentally gets bumped. Sorry, just my opinion. Cheers.

    Aesthetic refurbishing of NAD amp

How good are you with spray painting and masking ? The cover can obviously be removed and sprayed. Make sure you water paper all the scratches until they are flush with the surrounding paint or even bare metal or you will see them through the respray. Start with about 400 grit over the...

Any competent mechanics on the forum ?

As this seems to be an interference engine, should i remove both camshafts before I crank the motor to get cylinder 1 at TDC and the main chain  timing correctly lined up ? Then I at least won't get valves in the way, and I can go from there. I suppose I would also see if there are bent valves...

Any competent mechanics on the forum ?

Thanks guys. I'm going to try slowly cranking it today. If it's a mess, then it will be sold as scrap. Quiet sad actually, as it gave me 14 years of trouble free motoring, and mechanically and electrically, it was in perfect running order. :'(

Any competent mechanics on the forum ?

This is what the timing looks like. The yellow links are supposed to line up with the paint marks on the sprockets. This is how I got it back, so not sure if the damage is already done, or the motor hasn't been cranked over yet. Hoping for the second option. share picture

Any competent mechanics on the forum ?

It seems I'm the only person on the planet that managed to blow a cylinder head gasket on a Nissan 2.4 16V motor. The useless idiot of a mechanic ( recommended by a friend ) did a half job and stalled for 3 months so I sent a tow truck to retrieve it and bring it back to my house. The engine is...

    Acoustic Energy AE1 mk1.

I have a single AE2 with stand, and it's still looking for a partner. emails to AE in the UK go unanswered. As mentioned, they are rare, and I hope they get recovered. Possibly put out ( or ask a friend) to post a wanted ad offering big bucks for a pair on scumtree, OLX, Facebook etc. You never...

    Parking in JHB CBD

You can't just park under Ghandi Square. I was there last week and drove down. Security came running and told me I have to "pre arrange" with management. It's pitch dark down there. Not one light works. Can't help.you Im afraid.

Any ideas for a "side hustle"? I'm bored.

" The Professionals ". Not the most organised shoot happening at the moment. I see the same "extra " faces on set often, and really feel sorry for them especially in the repetitive commercial world. ACTION. Cut, reset back to one. ACTION cut reset......400 times...Kills us too ;D

Advice on battery chargers / tenders

I've been charging my 12v 9Ah batts on Vanson fully automatic chargers for years. I use the batts during the day and charge them overnight and they're ready to go again in the morning. They might be a bit small for bigger batteries, but about R200 from security shops. Bought mine at Chubb...

Sansui AU317, which Nad amp can it be compared with

At one stage I had a 217 and a 3020 series 20 at the same time. The Sansui's of that period made full use of the volume knob ( actually mentioned in their manual I think ), which gave you the perception of them being under powered. I ended up keeping the NAD and building a complete period system...
