Where to from here? A beginners journey

I don't have any experience with Ortofon carts, just that in my system my Linn K9 (AT95 based) cart is sensitive to capacitance. I am in no way implying that it would be the same for every cart, system, person etc. In my system with my cart with my ears building a lower capacitance tonearm cable...

Where to from here? A beginners journey

In my opinion the reputation that AT mm carts have for being a bit on the bright side  is quite possibly due to their general use with phono stages with too high capacitive loading. Get that right as I think I have achieved in my system and they sound a lot more natural with no brightness. Add...

Where to from here? A beginners journey

It is a bit unpredictable. The inductance of the cartridge reacts with the input capacitance to form a resonant frequency. If this resonant frequency lies at around 8-10kHz it would cause the sound to be bright. If higher than that it could cause the sound to be dull. Check out this very...

Where to from here? A beginners journey

Yes, that is my source, but also, in my reading up on the subject I have found a number of references to the fact that Yamaha shares the same or similar phono stages amongst their amplifiers and that generally their input capacitance is on the high side. Some refer to capacitance as high as...

Where to from here? A beginners journey

Yes, quite an interesting topic to delve into. I went on a quest to build a lower capacitance tonearm cable with positive results. One of the things that I have also found though is that, in my setup, the quality of the stylus was of major importance to eliminate end of side distortion that I'm...

Where to from here? A beginners journey

The built-in phono stage of the Yamaha has a fixed load of 47k Ohm and 220pF capacitance. If you add the typical tonearm cable capacitance you will easily exceed 400pF. That is a bit high for the AT cartridge which requires 100 - 200pF. It means that the high frequencies will never sound right...

Where to from here? A beginners journey

It was quite a journey! Started with an entry level Pro-ject phono stage followed by a number of diy phono stages. The one I ended up liking the most is based on the Boozhound using JFET's. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

Where to from here? A beginners journey

In my opinion quality of the phono stage is of extreme importance. Once I sorted that out upgrading to a VM95ML stylus was a huge improvement in my setup and completely eliminated IGD. I would only upgrade the turntable after that. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

How to know/calculate the current output of your amp?

This is from the manual for the RB 980BX which I believe is a very similar but slightly older design. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

    Guillaume Lemaire

What a shock! I chatted to him not long ago about some cable that I wanted to buy and learnt that he was in hospital. My condolences to his family. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

How NOT to sell a record

You just have to love his deliciously non-pc sense of humour. Completely out of touch with modern norms but so what! Glad you could save the record. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

    Right angle tonearm cable plug

Thanks to @Hi-Phibian I managed to get a Cardas DIN plug and some 4x24awg shielded cable. I got some WBT 0147 RCA plugs from @fdlsys to complete the construction of my new tonearm cable. It sounds excellent - so much better than the stock Linn cable. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

Repairing surrounds for AR bookshelf speakers ??

There are various companies that can replace the surrounds at low cost. You could also check if any of them would sell you just the surrounds, although if it was my money I would have it done by someone with experience. I am aware of Riaan/Resonant Frequency in Cape Town and Merle in Gauteng, ...
