Have they tried disconnecting the earth wire? I have had a couple of turntables which would hum loudly with the earth wire connected but dead quiet with it disconnected.

Yes that's the one. I'm still looking for a decent vintage Yamaha cdp but the Philips is doing just fine for now, especially when I have it hooked up to my Theta dac and Cary "cd processor".

From what I have read about STD turntables I would say it is definitely worth getting if the price is right, I have never owned one myself but they are apparently comparable (or better, depending who you ask) to Sondeks from the same period. Mercury you can get from old thermometers.  :thumbs:

If I'm not mistaken the owner of said business is also a member here.. Unless there is another dealer in Pta east I'm not aware of? I've done quite a bit of business with them in the past but your experience will make me think twice about doing business with them again.

Back when I still had my PrimaLuna I used new production Mesa Boogie EL34 str-447 valves in it and they sounded really good to my ears, even better than some older valves I tried.
