    New AV Room build

IMHO 7.1.2 is a waste of time. The number of times the 2 rear speakers play meaningful sound are minimal. I consider 5.1.2 totally adequate, especially in that size room as at 5,6m length the room is not long enough to allow the rear speakers to be placed far back enough if you have 2 rows of...

Blu-ray is dead - heckuva job, Sony!

I suppose if you live in Namibia and often drive off-road with your 4x4 driverless will not work. Uber included.

    Dream Home Theatre Systems

Simply awesome. Lots of investment here. Undoubtedly soundwise better than any cinema I have been to here in the RSA. BUT >>> +1 @Juggy. The screen/image size does not do justice to the sound quality IMHO. Home theatre is about image first and then the sound that enhances the image, not the...

    Positioning of kit

The main reason you?d want to use balanced cables in an audio system is to prevent noise from being induced over long cable runs. With a balanced connection, the signal is conveyed from the source along two separate wires, with a third serving as a shield. (The signal is in phase on the first...

    Positioning of kit

Use XLR interconnect between Pre and Power, not RCA, and they can easily be about 20m appart if not more. Based on what you say that will then enable you to have a short digital cable from DAC to Pre. Why? Cost effective solution and enables multiple positioning of Pre. The downside of a long...

    Building antireflective acoustic panels

'scuse my ingnorance, but what is the difference between anti-reflective and absorbers? A possible reason the voice sounded better is because many other frequencies were removed, so voices were better but other frequencies were poorer?

    50- 60" TV vs Projector

Any TV smaller than 80 inch does not really enable panning of sound to remain connected to the move of the images onscreen. Then projector is better. From 65 inch it becomes OK. But 80 inch is what is needed.

How does one get the passion back?

Do not underestimate your later need for audio - later in life - when all the kids are out of the house etc - like from 55 and older - post retirement. Then it can save your life. The passion returns as soon as you obtain more me-time.

    Installation of bulkheads

I bought 8x rolls of Isotherm for corner bass traps. Stacked 2 ontop of one another in each corner. Almost zero bass trapping benefit. I unrolled some of the Isotherm and placed it at firstreflection points. It worked as absorption of mid and high frequencies. But for any bass below 200Hz...

    Installation of bulkheads

Isotherm in bulkheads to achieve bass taming is a waste of time based on my experience. Isotherm does not have enough mass.

What's the one thing you will never sell (Careful now ! :stop: )

My Vivid K1 speakers. They are the best speakers for home theatre due to the way the 4 LF drivers cross over. Brilliant Laurence Dickie design. Very surprised this attribute has received so little attention to date.

    What speakers should I buy

+1 Hi-Phibian >>> Audiophysics Of everything mentioned I would opt for these. Especially if I could get them new or close to new at the R10k budget.

    How many subwoofers are ideal?

Dear Phase, All is still very much work in progress. But currently in place >>> Vivid K1's as mains. Vivid C1 as centre. Vivid C1's for side surrounds Vivid K1's for rears The REL's are a great match for the Vivid's I feel. Oppo 95 Lex MC12HD processor at the mo NuPrime MCH-K38 power and...

    How many subwoofers are ideal?

As a speculative further question, I wonder ...... I only have 3x REL B1 subs and am looking for a 4th. But until I find that 4th REL, what is likely to be the best to do? Only use the 3x REL's I have, or add a 4th similar size and powered sub of another brand like say M&K THX or B&W800 until...

    How many subwoofers are ideal?

How many subwoofers are ideal? While reading the ?Building a stereo high-end system around a subwoofer? thread at https://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,64766.0.html I started wondering ?? 1) At what number of subs does adding an additional sub have no further benefit? 2) How dependent...

Which component(s) in your system are neutral?

Accurate (faithful?) reproduction of the original performance is what is important to me. As the artists intended it to be. Even if it is more fun with increased bass etc. But then you need to attend live performances or recording processes to have a reference point. You need sytems that are...
