How many panels - question for experienced users

It does seem that 9 is the upper limit. It’s winter now and sun is low in sky, so output of panels is lower than it will be in summer. The operation is fine. I’m in a temporary situation as my original 10kw Luxpower inverter is in a warranty claim. It has a higher Vmax than the temporary Deye...

How many panels - question for experienced users

Update on my experience. Installed 10 panels, Jinko 555 watt. On one series string running into a temporary inverter. A Deye 8kW. Temporary- long story. Battery is 14,6 kilowatt hour Volta Stage 4. The panels are in a long line - and it’s been interesting seeing how the available power varies...

Information required - smart sockets and isolators

As I progress down the road of recent inverter install, I am looking at additional functionality. Now I'm looking for smart switches. Requirements: 1. Wifi compatibility with Apple and with Android - yes we have two phones in this house. If it's not possible to do both, then Apple is first...

How many panels - question for experienced users

Thanks guys. Most informative. I like the metal conduit requirement. The hot summer sun in our country is not kind to plastic/vinyl/pvc or whatever is on the outside of cables. I would gladly have paid a little more to install metal conduit. Now I know it’s required. And earthing does prevent...

How many panels - question for experienced users

Thank you all for most useful information. I have been looking at all my neighbours roofs. And asking questions. So it seems common that 8 panels make up a string. So I could go for one string of 8. Then at a future time do the second string. Then replace first string. IMHO then I would not...

How many panels - question for experienced users

Morning folks I have recently had a 10kw inverter (Luxpower hybrid) and two Varta 5.1 batteries installed by a team from Somerset West. We are near Hermanus. No PV panels yet. That's next. I chose an experienced electrical contractor as I wanted safe electrics. I'm a retired electrical...

Impact of load-shedding on your hifi related priorities and habits?

I totally understand that a system without panels is a sunk cost. Although it will sustain the stock in the chest deep freeze for a couple of days so that’s a small return. From my time as a property manager, where we learned to discount property additions at 8 percent. Together with the...

Impact of load-shedding on your hifi related priorities and habits?

Since I posted above, a change in direction. A wise electrician pointed out that there have been recent improvements in inverters which continue to evolve. It is possible to purchase brand name 10kw inverters for prices close to the prices for popular 5kw sets. And the popular brand whose name...

China: has brand China made any strides in the hifi market in SA?

And we need to be mindful of the strategic positioning of the items we buy. That positioning applied by the suppliers to the items they supply to us. And I base my limited understanding of strategy on principles articulated by Professor Michael Porter. Essentially supplies fall into two groups...

Impact of load-shedding on your hifi related priorities and habits?

When load shedding started we had the demise of a DSTV decoder and our wine fridge - possibly caused by spikes and/or surges. I studied elec engineering at varsity and my rusty memory occasionally kicks in. And I worked at a very large power consumer, responsible for all electrical devices...

HELP - my system keeps tripping my earth leakage

Glad to see a positive outcome without you having to resort to expensive remedies. Imho the manufacturing tolerances of mass produced items can lead to unwanted results: E/L breakers built to a price point.

Ariston RD40 refurbished. This one kindly sold to me by forum member Chingy. I’ve added an Origin Live Onyx arm imported by Audio Exchange. Cartridge is Goldring E3 sold by Audico. Then today I added some appliance rubber feet courtesy of Takealot. Just the rubber foot without the plastic spacer.

What are your own subjective criteria for rating or judging a component and or system?

Music played on car audio systems can be surprisingly good. On reflection the interior of a car seems to be a better environment than a room with flat walls, parallel surfaces and WAF constraints. And I have never heard a floorstanding speaker that I like as much as bookshelf boxes on sturdy stands.

Iconic products - those gems that passed through your life

I’m a basic hifi owner. Somehow I seem to spend more on records and CDs than on equipment. But I have heard many systems in my life. And can count on one hand the kit that I would buy again. Garrard 301 with SME arm and a Shure cartridge. I’ve heard a few of these and thoroughly enjoy them. My...
