    Are DIY subwoofers worth it???

I have 2 passive subwoofers, both previously owned by other DIYers. One of them is a correctly built bass reflex. The other uses a PR that the first owner had neglected to tune (although I had alerted him to the need to do so - perhaps he forgot or dismissed it mentally). Predictably, he sold it...

REW Measurements of AlleyCat's Room- Take 2

I had the great pleasure of vising Allan and hearing for myself what his efforts have produced. On earlier visits I was never convinced that he would be able to fix the problems with his system. I heard a few different configurations, but they all suffered from the same characteristic sound: a...

Hi Res cat among the normal res pigeons

A big problem with comparing bit depth and bit rates is that one is never sure that the material being compared is essentially the same. Record companies tend to be trigger-happy when it comes to remastering.

    Ribbon speaker cables - benefits?

I spotted that part of the cable that was in use at the show was creased. That is a particular vulnerability that would cheese me off if it happened to (my cables). Otherwise, there is a cool factor to ribbon-flat cables. But I'd say they are more susceptible to physical damage then...

What is a SCAM or FRAUD and what is not.

No accusations here, but could you please explain: Why would you remove the original serial number? It is part of the item's identity and traceability. I can understand you adding your own serial number, but not removing the original. It is possible for both to co-exist; it's like having a...

2024 Cape Town Audio Expo - 25th, 26th & 27th October at the Newlands Sun Hotel

Congratulations to the organisers and exhibitors! The show has grown significantly since last year. I was glad to see new exhibitors. Here are some of my impressions: 1. CB Audio - I was glad to see a local retailer of loudspeaker drivers - Faital Pro. I had spoken to Christian before, when I...

2024 Cape Town Audio Expo - 25th, 26th & 27th October at the Newlands Sun Hotel

I've just had a thought... @chrisc ... I know it's late.... Would it be possible to arrange small South African flags printed on note cards (or similar indicator), for placing on or with locally produced products?

SEAS Prestige 5.5" 8Ω with which tweeter?

There's no absolute pro/con to series vs L-pad resistor attenuation. It comes down to the specific application - what it needs. To illustrate: My first loudspeaker was a huge success. My approach was: 1. Insert conjugate impedance-flattening networks to flatten the respective drivers'...

    DIY isolation transformer

100VA is on the small side, if you are going to buy one specifically for this purpose. 1kVA, on the other hand, might be quite expensive. There was someone here quite recently who introduced himself and his transformer-making services...

    SL-1200 vs ChatGPT

I had some fun with ChatGPT this morning, having read the comments in the other thread where @The Mod was asking about the SL-1200 (https://www.avforums.co.za/threads/sl1200-turntable-are-they-worth-it.110216/). If you have some time to waste, you might find it interesting...

    DIY isolation transformer

I have a story! On my first day at one job, I blew up an expensive spectrum analyser when a wrong ground connection routed power through its input ground and blew off tracks and damaged some circuitry. Equipment was beyond repair. Thus, my shared "wisdom" of understanding the consequences of...

    Filter network on cables

It blocks radio frequency interference (RFI). If your equipment is susceptible to RFI, you will potentially see an improvement. If not, it won't make a difference. Many older designs suffer from this design deficiency. As alluded to by @Samayanaya, modern designs should not suffer this problem.

SEAS Prestige 5.5" 8Ω with which tweeter?

I have played with the DXT. Sold it on some time back. They have a good reputation. However, I find that if a driver does not leave a lasting impression with me, eventually I will let it go. Could be that I haven't mastered the knack of tuning a waveguided tweeter. Nevertheless, if that is the...

    DIY isolation transformer

The oscilloscope's ground connection is not for the purpose of earthing, but to connect to the reference point in the circuit you are measuring. Usually - but not always - the reference point is 0V or signal ground. In some (typically older) equipment 0V or signal ground is also connected to...
