I'm curious to know what "often" means...(?) If you remove the passives you will compromise low frequency extension. At worst you may have to apply low frequency EQ to compensate; this will require a lot more power from the amps, all things being equal (also depends on the material you play).

The easiest way to neaten it up is to have an adaptor 3D printed. A nicer solution is to have aluminium CNC'ed. An alternative is to make a plug/insert from MDF and then cut the tweeter recess out of it, like I did for this Infinty Primus 360:

As alluded to by Martin, it's a missed opportunity if you are requiring your main speakers and amplifier to still produce the full range signal, whereas you have a subwoofer that can take over the lower frequency work. The fear of filters is quite an antiquated response. But to each their own...

Unfortunately, the "sub output" found on stereo amps is exactly the same as "pre-outs" that you sometimes found on integrated amps: just a full-range signal which is level-controlled by the volume control. I find this to be a major con, as there is nothing about this signal that makes it...

Yes. This is generally how it is done for line-level signals: driving impedance low, load impedance high.

An equaliser won't fix your acoustic problems. It will help a bit if you have some standing waves or other resonance, or a frequency response anomaly in the speaker itself, but not much beyond that. If you can't do acoustic treatment, you might have to fight fire with fire, and that means...

I wonder if the problem is not perhaps something other than the tube. I'd do that after removing the speaker drivers, one of which is a subwoofer.

Modern foam formulations are more durable than the older types; they don't break down as easily. I have some foam-surround woofers that are over 20 years old that have not perished.

It's a bit of a technical issue, this one, as the tube is at end of life.

My BIL is about to replace an old Sony Wega 81cm CRT TV that was a beast in its day. Sadly, now it has a very dim tube. Everything else is working. I was just wondering if there is anyone who might be interested in it. Location is Cape Town.
