    Yamaha NS-690 resto-mod

No, I have not. I'm sure that I might get it off ebay, but at a significant cost. The thing about these Yamaha speakers is that the tweeters are very good. But the crossover they chose for it (6kHz) does not require the tweeter to deliver its maximum performance (this is also the case with the...

Dunno when there wil be a Part 2. That will address the tweeter replacement.

If you can forgive my mumbling and the low volume levels, I have something to share...

    Central image challenge

Yes, probably acoustics imposing its influence. I had a similar effect in my system though I believe, judging from your description, not to the same extent, as I am running a 2.1 setup. I repeated the test on my main system, this time moving further back to improve the speaker spacing geometry...

    Central image challenge

Not at all! Your system is either sorted or it's not. I imagine most of us are not in a posistion to even set up our systems the best way due to it having to coexist in a domestic/family environment. It is (to me) useful to discover the exact shortcomings of my system. And also reassuring to...

    Meter issues

If you are making no headway with your local municipal office, your next bet is to contact your councillor.

    Central image challenge

I have further info from my own tests. I did the test on my desktop speakers. Given the amount of junk on my desk, I was surprised to discover that I got the same results as with my main system. Central image was good except for the high frequency bit, which again did not have the image...

    Central image challenge

The video does contain tests for stereo width. This challenge is specifically about central image and whether your system maintains it across the audio frequency spectrum. I think that it is a fundamental of stereo reproduction to the extent that it may be a prerequisite for good soundstaging...

    English 101: to vs too

One of the most painful things to witness is swear or cuss words becoming normalised in normal speech.

    Central image challenge

Here's what I observed: Image was stable until it got to the high end. I sounds like my tweeters might be out of phase. I know my speakers are not perfect, as I have temporarily fitted old Philips tweeters in place of the blown tweeters on my Yamaha NS-690s. I'll revisit this when I do the final...

    Central image challenge

I came across this (IMO) very useful audio test video on YouTube. Now I have a challenge to all those who obsess with stereo imaging: play the part at 0:31 called Phantom Center Stability. You can try it with a good set of headphones and then on your room stereo. Your headphones should pass the...

My journey down the hi-fi rabbit hole

I believe the post (by @AlleyCat ) quoting the Verdant guy's (bierfeldt) comments most correctly describes the situation between floorstanders and standmounts/bookshelf types. For my own upcoming Utimate* Build I am making a 3-way that includes a horn tweeter, 5" mid and 10" woofer that will...

    English 101: to vs too

I was recently again irked by the misuse of to and too. It occurred to me that there may be an easy way for the Afrikaans speakers to remember which word applies. The clue lies in the amount of vowels in the Afrikaans equivalent words: to: na; te (om te) - single vowel too: ook; oormatig -...

Anyone have experience with eltax millennium 500 speakers

I don't know these particular speakers, but I know Eltax as a good value entry-level speaker range (my friend had a full Eltax HT speaker package). With the 3-way configuration, the prospects of this being a good speaker are improved. I would go and check them out if I were in the market.

My journey down the hi-fi rabbit hole

I tend to agree. Those panels are not made for bass treatment. However, there will be some effect in the bass region, however limited. We usually think of panel effectiveness in relation to its thickness; that is front to back. But some sound also travels transversely through the panels, in...

My journey down the hi-fi rabbit hole

Well, now that you've changed the acoustics, you'll have to do the whole speakers thing all over again! :p Thanks for sharing, especially with pics.

Insightful commentary on modern jazz and its genesis

Why do modern Jazz musicians all sound the same?

    Blast from the past.

OMW! I just happened upon the music system of my latter teen years! Having lived with a rather nice Blaupunkt 1000 music system for some years, which was effectively mine, I moved back to my mom's house at age 17 after my dad passed. Late night matric studying and Karl Kikillus on the radio, I...
