REW Measurements of AlleyCat's Room- Take 2

@AlleyCat why not, as a start, try a software solution such as Roon or a plugin to at least experiment with EQ if you stream or play ripped music?

The 2024 Global hifi show calendar

Axpona 2024 seems to have been a feast both for the ears and the eyes. Hopefully, some of the products on show will make their way over to SA as well. Some very interesting designs. https://www.hifipig.com/axpona-2024-report-part-1/ https://www.hifipig.com/axpona-2024-report-part-2/

FS -DACs Fezz Buzz- An Early Bird offer on the Lampizator designed Equinox

The Equinox DC is winning friends not only for its slick design but, more importantly, for its sound. "The Equinox is a fantastic sounding machine. It's not clinical, and at no time does it get harsh. Even on INXS some of their tracks can get too much. Vocals excel with the Fezz, listening to...

    REW Measurements of AlleyCat's Room

The measured result is a function of both the speaker and room, plus the interaction. We should perhaps be careful not to isolate one of the components and attribute the in-room response measurement to it, i.e. the room. Could this not be part of the explanation of the measured results as well?

QUICK REVIEW: Pathos Aurium Headphone Amplifier

It's always good to get an excellent press cover, especially for products that do have a strategic price tag. "Before heading down to the lower level I revisited the ASONA room to listen to the new Dan Clark E3 closed-back headphones driven by a Pathos headphone amp. It was a very impressive...

    FdlSys - Sad news

I am still shocked by the news, and it has been twirling in my mind just how sad it is and what a loss it must be for his family and loved ones, considering how he touched so many of us with his knowledge, attitude, and character. I last met up with Mike before I left Jhb last year, and as so...

    on-line scam

That's on point. SARS and Customs are becoming more intent on closing loopholes. The APN process, which was activated in December 2023, is a mechanism to ensure VAT and Duties are paid. Under declaration by the shipping agent is something I would not entertain as this only causes delays and lots...

Listening Level (dB and Room size)

This is another key to unlocking the topic under the discussion- Fletcher and Munson/ISO226(2003) "Arguably the main takeaway here is that our perception of tonal balance is dependent on the sound pressure level at which we are listening. In other words, how we set our monitor gain can...

Listening Level (dB and Room size)

I was at church on Friday with apparently the biggest pipe organ in SA, and the organist really ripped loose from time to time. I checked with my phone during one song, and the peaks were just touching 90dB where we were sitting, and the average, which was relatively loud, was around 75dB to 80 dB.

Listening Level (dB and Room size)

@Jazzy I agree with @KenMasters that the 20% is a general drop in volume. The quote comes from the article linked, and I think it was written with the general population as readers in mind and not for enthusiasts on a forum like this. (https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/aug/23/arts.artsnews) My...

Listening Level (dB and Room size)

I am following this interesting discussion and, therefore, also am looking around for meaningful data points. The first is from the world of classical music. There is a movement to limit orchestras in the UK and Europe to around 85 dB. This is about 20% down from the current average of 90dB to...

    Spikes vs Cups vs Pucks

It is a complex subject, and the answer might just come to it depends... Spikes don't drain energy. It does not act as a one-way valve but more like a 2-way street. Therefore, using a viscous substance that converts the energy to heat is often part of an excellent solution to the challenge...

Small Valve amps vs Big Valves amps

The High-end industry is good at creating problems (challenging to drive loudspeakers ) and then trying to solve these problems with complex and expensive solutions. (big, powerful amps that are complex. Think multiple output devices, complex feedback and protection circuits)- that is the...

The 2024 Global hifi show calendar

I am a keen follower of the hi-fi circus of shows around the globe. Of course, the Big Daddy and Mommy, the CES, and Highend Munich are big annual news items and attract much attention, but I think the smaller and often regional shows are more interesting. These smaller shows are often...
