Stereo vs Multi-channel for Music Listening

An interesting perspective on multichannel audio for music is the approach taken by AIX records, an american record label. www.aixrecords.com What I like about their releases is that they not only record their albums in video (including some in 3D) but they also offer different audio tracks...

    Med8er good for music?

My main issue with the Mede8er is the lack of gapless playback from one track to the next. Also noticed that I can't scan (search) backward or forwards for some flac files, or can only do so at 2x speed at best. I have never figured out why that is. No such issue though with mp3. Has anybody...

Am I allowed to take speakers with me on a plane?

I've done this a number of times. As recently as a month ago, I brought in two 8 inch woofers, bubble-wrapped as hand luggage from the US. The items aroused some suspicion during the x-ray scan done by security. They asked me to open bubble wrapping and probed it with some machine and cleared it...

    Auditioning & Buying In Ears

Thanks for the offer, but at $425 they are definitely out of my price range. I'll take further discussions to PM.

    Auditioning & Buying In Ears

I find myself spending the vast majority of my music listening via my Yamaha in-ears. They sound very good to me, but unfortunately not at all comfortable. I decided to purchase a different brand, Paradigm something?. They visually appeared to be suitable to my narrow ear canal but I was unsure...

Why is it that people complain about not being able to listen to High end gear?

Interesting how experiences vary. Mine was quite the opposite. I was a student years ago in varsity in Braamfontein and after reading a review in AVSA on a monster Polk speaker system I went in to Audiotronic to have a listen. I was in no position to afford the system, or anything in the store...

    Power ratings?

Linked to the question Vaughan asked above, it's not uncommon to read on this forum and others claims like "speaker X requires at least XX watts to sing". Given what has been said in this thread, how does one come to such a conclusion?

    Paradigm Speakers

:) Those are the RF-52s. I was auditioning them at the time. They are very nice speakers in their own right. I like them a lot. They now do duty at my parents house.

    Paradigm Speakers

I'm also a Paradigm fan. I have the Studio 100s V5. I also have the CC690 center which is easily the best center channel speaker I have ever heard. Sadly all of them have been in storage for months since I cannot use them where I currently live.

Dolby TrueHD vs DTS HD Master audio

Even if a disc contained both the dolby and DTS soundtracks (less so with blurays than it used to be with DVDs), that is not to say they were both mixed and mastered the same way. This was, more often than not in my experience, the case with Dolby Digital and DTS on DVDs where the DTS...

    Surround-sound in movies lacklustre?

I must say I agree with the OP. There are many many moments in movies where I felt the mix could have made better use of the rear/side channels. That is if the action/scene calls for it. I am not a fan of the "all channels stereo" of "party mode" effect that one can employ in some AV receivers...

    Building Speaker Stands

Yes, the rods are heavy - about 13kg each. I like the sturdiness of the solid rods compared to pipes. No chance of accidentally knocking down a stand made up of 3 of these rods. If what I want to do can't work, I'll resort to using steel pipes. Anyone in and around Joburg you can recommend Ian?

    Building Speaker Stands

Hi all I've got 6 steel rods that I want to use to build speaker stands. They are 50mm in diameter. They look like this: I want to drill threaded holes on both ends of each rod (as indicated by the arrow) so that I can attach the top and bottom plates onto the rod using bolts. Who can I go...

    Anybody know about these guys?

I took a subwoofer amp to them to be fixed back in April and the fellow who works there (Leon) is not the most pleasant of characters to deal with. He does not reply to emails or phone calls most of the time. When he does, he'll give empty promises. I've pretty much given up on it. I wouldn't...
