    Test Gear

I didn't mention the price - I have replaced it with a QA403 so surplus to my needs - message me if you are interested :)

    Test Gear

I have a Quant Asylum QA401 for sale - designed for audio and can measure power, distortion (-108dB) frequency response, signal to noise and more. It also can also do sweep tests creating graphs like distortion vs power, frequency response vs level etc. single-ended and balanced ins and outs. If...

    Do you power condition?

Yeah it even creeps in when i use the analyser with a laptop on battery - insidious!

    Do you power condition?

If you running an inverter it ain't good. I have a Deye 5kW inverter and it generates a nasty spike at ~16kHz and a spray of harmonics at multiples of that. See attached images. All inverters are switched power supplies so I guess no real surprise there but I thought the switching frequency...

REW Measurements of AlleyCat's Room- Take 2

Get a Behringer DEQ2496: very cheap and because it has optical ins and outs so you needn’t use its ADCs or DACs

    Adding LED lighting to valves

Octal bases have a ‘key’ protruding from the middle of the base not sure you would want to remove that, but you can - I know because I have broken a couple off….

Switched mode power supplies vs Buck converters

You can make that linear supply a lot quieter for cheap:

Computer sound card with Co-ax out (spdif)

If it is a desktop PC, save your cash and search Amazon for "SPDIF bracket" almost all modern motherboards have the spdif signal on the board already

Where to buy good quality resistors in SA

The white sandcast things everyone poo-poos are wirewound resistors which are quieter than film resistors (no excess noise) - you can find better looking wirewounds at RS Components - nice green vitreous enamel clad thingies or sexy gold heatsinked ones - but you are just paying for the looks...

    How much do cables matter?

When it comes to discussions about cables there cannot be any peace ✌️

Topping A90 not working with balanced DAC via XLR cables

Checked your DAC is set for balanced out and the Topping is set for balanced input? I doubt the Topping will use fuses - its a headphone amplifier not a power amp - probably uses electronic protection.

    Spectrum Analyser

White noise is a sound whereupon all frequencies therein have exactly equal levels. Some instruments and recordings do have information above 20kHz so recording audio at higher sampling rates is not pointless - whether we can actually hear the results may be pointless. But it is interesting to...

    Spectrum Analyser

The flat straight line you’re seeing at `24kHz indicates the audio was originally recorded at 48kHz (audio bandwidth can only ever be half the sampling frequency). Many hi-res files 88.2kHz, 96kHz or 192kHz are often just 44.1/48kHz files upsampled to the new frequency - thus they cannot contain...

    Spectrum Analyser

You wont be able to tell if the file is 24bit from the display. If file is 24bit it will indicate that - it is a file property. What you want to know is whether the music was 16bit and then saved/converted to 24bit, as opposed to recorded in 24bit.

    Spectrum Analyser

What the image is showing you is that there is very little information above 20kHz and possible the extra info above 25kHz is an artifact of upsampling? There should be a view that shows you frequency along the x-axis (left to right) and level vertically - that kind of display is easier to read...

    How much do cables matter?

@sailor you did not say that your cables are low capacitance - but you talked at length about the low K that Teflon has and that was the reason that you used it and found it to make your cables superior. Thus I assumed that you were talking about your cable being low capacitance - my error...

    How much do cables matter?

Your response got me a-thinking – so I dutifully gathered all my cables together. You harp on a lot about your cables being ‘low capacitance’ but are rather coy as to exactly how much capacitance they have? So, I (tediously) measured the length of each cable and it’s capacitance with a Fluke 287...
