    First impressions: NAD T778

Switch to using the 12V trigger?

I never disputed that. Western Jewish people had already begun settling in Palestine in the late 1800s with the rise of Zionism. Factual, not passive aggressive.

It’s only been around since the mid 1920s - it was named after the biblical city of Beneberak.

Who is using the hifi in the house?

No, my wife's too intimidated to even pick up the remote, so all our music listening is done sitting together with myself at the helm. She has a Marshall Woburn 3 in her library that she makes use, but mostly to play ambient sounds like rainstorms and such while she reads.

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

I never said it wasn’t possible (I tried to qualify my statements with words like "broadly" and "competent" and highlighted questionable high-end esoterica), just that in my experience it’s not a problem with most mainstream modern electronics.

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

My current amplifier is class D Purifi 1ET400A DIY build. It's a good amp, measures well, doesn't sound any different from my Denon's own inbuilt amplification to my ears, but it runs cooler and is better suited to driving my speakers at higher volumes. Mine is a good amp and suits my needs...

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

I’m going to refer back to an old thread on the subject, specifically this contribution from the late Ampdog: https://www.avforums.co.za/threads/do-amplifiers-impart-a-sonic-signature-to-music.93877/page-4#post-1054010

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

Two sides of the same coin really. I had to be honest with myself after a while and admit I didn’t really hear any differences I could concretely put my finger on between various amps, cables and such I’d owned, (outside of NAD 3020 which I later learnt was designed to be non-linear to...

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

The difference doesn't have to be positive or negative, it's the expectation of a difference paired with our openness to suggestion. I think there are plenty of examples of poorly performing equipment (often overpriced and esoteric) but with competently designed electronics there is very...

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

I think if you expect differences you’ll hear them and I think a group of like minded individuals can do a great job of reinforcing this tendency.

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

It means that modern electronics are to the point that things like digital to analogue conversion and amplification are broadly solved. As long as the consumer purchases commensurate equipment, differences between them is negligible and terms like “synergy” have more to do with the how one...

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

Speakers and the room are by far and away the biggest factors - the passive influence of the rest is broadly placebo.

Person of the Year is bestowed on any individual that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year". Stalin and Hitler are fellow recipients.

CRT TVs. Is there still a demand for them somewhere?

Arcade cabinets don't use standard TVs, but there is some demand for good CRTs amongst the retro gaming community, depends on the model. Probably not a very large market in SA though.

85 inch TV for my home theater

I think if you want to go with larger speakers you're probably better off going the projector route and acoustically transparent screen - or I suppose you could go with a phantom channel. Another idea floated with regards large micro-LED displays is reflecting sound from a ceiling mounted...

85 inch TV for my home theater

Mine is like that and it's an 83", also a proper cinema will have seating where that is achieved along with the correct viewing angle. I don't know how they do it in SA, but here the seats in that row are more plush than the rest (with accompanying elevated ticket pricing).

85 inch TV for my home theater

I'm not quite picturing your setup, but ideally you do want your eyes to be parallel to the centre of the screen. It does get tricky as TVs get larger. I personally don't like wall mounting and opted for a lower, 40cm high TV cabinet in order to maintain a centred view with a larger display (my...

85 inch TV for my home theater

4.5 meters is actually not that close, mixed use recommended seating distance from an 85" is 3.63m (30° viewing angle) and the recommended distance for movies and TV shows is 2.59 m (40° viewing angle). My personal preference is even closer at a viewing angle of 45°.

    President Lincoln.

If that's in reference to my post, it's very much relevant, as demonstrated by the characters you choose listen to.
