    High-End Audiofoolery

To be clear, whilst I agree with the sentiments expressed by Mark Levinson in the above article, I am not saying the man himself is in any way above similar tactics. He may well be saying what he feels to be expedient and that is a different matter. I was only commenting on the specific assertions.

It gives you the opportunity to evaluate two different arms with everything else unchanged or you could choose to have your two favourite arms and have a MM cartridge on one and a MC cartridge on the other as Dan has done. That way you can switch between the two options at the flick of a button.

Well, that is a ludicrous statement to make. All you know with certainty is that you are buying from Michael. Beyond that, you have no clue where the goods come from and many times, we locals see the previous seller's ads from whom Michael bought in the first place. Just for clarification...

Well... if ever you doubted that we tend to buy with our eyes instead of our ears when it comes to "audio gear", then this thread should put a definitive end to that. I wonder how many members are sitting with setups that are visually appealing, consists of all the "right" brand names and is...

That GT range was only available in Japan but, the PF range was released to the rest of the world instead. So here is the PF range to take up the remaining space in your head. 😂 The first 2 are PF-800 and the last one is PF-1000.

@seanjammy, you appear to be experiencing cognitive difficulties as evidenced by your finding fault with everybody's replies.

    PM and non-response culture

The thread title is "PM and non-response culture". In your opening post you stated "Perhaps more upsettingly, the vast majority of people either don't respond, or respond weeks/months later" and I was pointing out that after sending a PM enquiry, I waited just over a week for a response which is...

People generally seem to have lost the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly. Either that or they simply don't give a sh*t. I recently responded to an ad asking if the seller had the original packaging and if they were negotiable. I eventually got a reply eight days later by which time I...

    High-End Audiofoolery

Levinson says the current high-end audio world has become a mafia that tries to take as much money as possible from music lovers while only giving the same things over and over again in new packages. Full story: https://www.headphonesty.com/.../audiophile-icon-calls.../...

Gents, I understand the parry and counterpunching taking place above but, let's leave the personal digs there and stay on point. In my opening post, I was simply appealing to the administrative staff to consistently and fairly enforce the rules. It is disheartening when you play by the rules...

A leopard does not change it's spots. There are a few people who have had good experiences but, I think more people will tell a different story. If you are local and can inspect the goods in person, then fine and well otherwise proceed with caution.

The Yamaha Gigantic & Tremendous series of extremely successful LP turntables was only distributed in Japan. To compensate, the rest of the world got the PF-1000 and PF-800 belt-driven record players which looked fairly similar. The Gigantic & Tremendous series included the GT-750, GT-1000...

Point taken however, it is sometimes not seen and people continue to make comments in the thread which would not happen if the thread could be locked. One occasionally sees a thread from several years ago being resurrected accidentally because it is not locked.

    The Cape Town Hi-Fi Club

Definitely a pleasant afternoon spent in the gentle end-of-summer sun with the always welcome smell of a braai in the background, a cold beverage in-hand, witty banter with fellow music lovers and good music. The Sound-Kaos VOX 3 speakers presented great tonality and clearly exposed the...

It would seem that since the change of ownership, there appears to be next to no interest in maintaining standards and likewise, next to no moderation. Whilst we certainly do not want to return to the over-zealous, heavy-handed moderation of the past, some gentle intervention to keep things on...

Come on Ari (@fredeb), you requested this thread. It's only fair you should participate and share your deck with the group. That goes for the rest of the members too, let us see what you are playing with. I will add one more to help motivate you all into sharing. I purchased my Thorens TD-124...

I bought my first Thorens deck in 2012. It was a stock-standard Thorens TD-150 with a TP-13 tonearm but, it had a generic headshell with a decent Shure M44C cartridge and stylus. It also had a smoky brown tinted dust cover. The first thing I did was to acquire a Thorens TP-50 headshell and...

@optimus, yes that is the original statically balanced, s-shaped tonearm with which the deck was sold. I speak under correction but, I think it is a Japanese Jelco or Jelco derivative. At any rate, it is a very good tonearm and the deck flew under the radar and was underrated in my opinion.

A short while ago in another thread, @fredeb (Ari) requested that we share our turntables with the forum. Since nobody has come forward as yet, I thought I would get the ball rolling and hopefully other members will be forthcoming. I purchased my first turntable in 1981. It was a Sansui SR-222...

    Speaker covers

I speak under correction but, as far as I know, it is only the professional speaker market that makes covers for speakers due to the fact that those speakers are constantly being transported around from gig to gig and thus need the protection. Home speakers tend to be placed correctly and left...
