    Materials for inexpensive speaker isolation

Consider Vibrapod isolaters and/or Vibrapod cones. They are formulated in 5 different weights to optimise their effectiveness. They work extremely well for DACs, amps and speakers, far better than random bits of rubber, thick foam, yoga mats and squash balls 🙄

    Mission M35 crossover woes

@Sproggit, here is a video from GR Research, it is one of Danny's many videos on XOs which I think is pertinent to your endeavour. GR Research Plenty quality info here. Resistors | GR-Research Also check out his story on caps and coils from home page.

    Sumo The Nine

Hey, great job and great amp. Once, long ago I used to sell them, one of Bongiorno's best. Still own a Son of Ampzilla

    Mission M35 crossover woes

When positioning these coils it is the direction of the coils themselves and not the axes. Having a look at your XO again shows I made a mistake so an apology for that. Just leave all coils as they are. The photo below shows the correct way to position coils for the least interference and yours...

    Mission M35 crossover woes

Yes really : Mundorf M-resist 10W MOX Resistors | HIFICollective So all 7 resistors for less than $20. I do not feel this is excessive for someone clearly stating he is unhappy with his speakers as they are. Regarding this: "They're not even used in speakers costing hundreds of grands."...

    Mission M35 crossover woes

OK, that helps. Keep all values the same as original. I would change all resistors for better ones. I don't have any idea what is available in NZ but I'm sure Australia would have a larger selection. I like Mills resistors which are available in 5W and 12W. If you can stretch the budget buy...

    Mission M35 crossover woes

Your speakers will respond well to a XO upgrade. They are a budget design and about 20 years old. The XOs will be mass assembled using cheap components. The drive units for this type of design will be good and in keeping with other competing products but one area of increasing profits is to cut...

    How much do cables matter?

@Tzs503gp, Hi, been waiting for my wife to find a photo she recently took, may post when found. My room is 5 x 7 m and well sorted acoustically Line stage = The Truth Digital player = Bryston BDP-1 Hi-res DAC = Bryston BDA-1 Main DAC = Wadia 15, redbook only Video and CD = Oppo 103D Amp = DIY...

    How much do cables matter?

Is this directed at me??? if so then what are you on about? I have not in any of my posts once mentioned ‘low capacitance’ let alone harping on. WOW, I did mention phase smearing. Show me where I said these things. Do not put words into my mouth. Did you forget to take your meds? Placing...

    How much do cables matter?

@Den123, the industry standard for s/pdif digital coax is a nominal 75 ohms and 110ohms for the balanced AES/EBU Perhaps you are confusing the 75 ohms you see mentioned as a DC impedance (resistance) with the characteristic impedance Zo also known as natural impedance obtained as a ratio of...

    How much do cables matter?

UTP? I think you misunderstand, I form the hot or live signal from using 2 or 3 bare solid wires each in its own larger tube and twisted for neatness. It's the geometry of the neutral or return wire that removes the need for a shield.

    How much do cables matter?

I do not use shields on any cables as explained above. See comments on shielding in my posts #130 and #132

    How much do cables matter?

@pwatts, Professor Atsumi Ohno from the Chiba Institute, Japan pioneered a new and better way of producing wire. The Ohno Continuous Cast (OCC) cables are produced differently to the conventional way the result being a single long grain crystal being formed at about 125m long with no crystal...

    How much do cables matter?

@chrisc, you are essentially driving each side of the circuit with its own amp providing double the voltage so more power out equating to a 3Db delta The gauge and number of conductors varies depending on its purpose. For digital I use only silver with 2 or 3 wires of...

    How much do cables matter?

Hi Chris, thanks for explaining it wasn't intended. This is the problem with communicating via keyboard, the true intent gets lost. Perhaps add a smiley when comment can be misconstrued. Happy new year to you and all 🍻🍹 🥴

    How much do cables matter?

highly unlikely you say: This suggests you have not compared 2 cables identical in every way except for different insulation so your statement is pure conjecture. Do the comparison and report back. My cables do not benefit from shielding. The return wire acts as a Faraday cage. From experience...

    How much do cables matter?

@avnerm, I would be happy to demonstrate my cables but I now live in Ireland so would not be easy. I will be making some cables for two friends in Durban and could invite you over. This will take a few months because the wire which I use is bare uninsulated solid OCC silver from USA as are the...

    How much do cables matter?

Hey, have you two jokers above actually read the link I posted? No, didn't think so! There is much to be learned about energy storage easily available on the net but seems it's more important for you to waste time on the forum making fun of and belittling someone knowledgeable on the phenomenon...

    How much do cables matter?

OK, The insulation on a wire acts as a capacitor and as you know or should know caps can store energy, the amount of energy stored is directly related to it's dielectric constant Dk. PVC which is common has a relatively high Dk rated at 4 and is unsuitable for audio. Much better is PTFE or one...

    How much do cables matter?

That is a vague and damning statement. In fact the better cables instead of damaging a sound stage or imaging will enhance it because more higher order harmonics are preserved. Timing is superior and performance across the spectrum is improved as is to be expected with cables that have a lower...
