Small vacuum tube integrated for desktop use

@Mars, good question, was built about 15 years ago so can't remember but an old photo shows 2 x 6SL7 so I would say the triode sections were paralleled. I remember I ran the 807's hot. This started out as an EL34 but needed to try out some other valves. I used 6l6, 5881 and KT66 and preferred...

Small vacuum tube integrated for desktop use

Looking at the photos of your transformer orientation tests I notice there is one set up you did not try. You never moved the mains Tx. Look at your photo where the meter reads 0.212 Leave the OTx. as it is and rotate the power unit so the directions of the laminations run front to back. In...

Room treatment - for open plan area

Below is a copy and paste of my reply to a similar question on another forum. " You are quite correct that without treatment a huge amount of quality reproduction is lost. A mediocre system in a correctly set up room will provide more enjoyment than throwing mega-bucks at expensive components...

    JHB Cable Listening Experiment

I saw it mentioned that 2 pairs of cables would be connected to the speakers, one pair using lugs and one pair using bananas and that the swap would happen on the amplifier's terminals. If that is how the test is going to be conducted then don't expect accurate results. Also your comment that...

    JHB Cable Listening Experiment

It would make sense to terminate the cables on test with identical connectors otherwise you'll be listening to the sound of different connectors as well! Bananas easiest for quick swaps.

    JHB Cable Listening Experiment

This link is to Ethan Winer's take on how to conduct a test: Worth a read. https://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/viewpoint/0419/How_To_Do_A_Proper_Listening_Test_Part1.htm I have no trouble hearing cables sound different, neither does my wife. I would have liked to attend this event but now...

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

@KenMasters, an excellent concise post. You explained in a few words what I have been trying to express with many. @shorai, good post.

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

@ @kinosfronimos, Oh boy you did not read the article that explains in detail the answer to your repeated question. The high frequencies well above 20K are part of the make up of the musical note, that is, they do not exist as a separate entity. They are contained within the waveform envelope...

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

Sarel, there are not a lot of tweeters that go much above 20K for the reasons I mentioned. Because of years of believing that 20K is all you need there just is no demand. Some of the big names in speakers are slowly starting to use tweets that go higher. The best you can get is the one...

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

@kinosfronimus, I have obviously done a bad job of explaining things so further input from me will not help you. Please just open the link I posted and read it a few times. Understand that for many years all you've been hearing is: 'if you can't hear above 20K then you are wasting your money'...

I mentioned that in my post, number 21 Below is copy/paste of part of page 1 of the link I provided so those following and too lazy to look this up can get started. As I said: this should be required reading for all audio enthusiasts. Page 1/6 THERE IS MUCH controversy about how we might move...

Sarel, It's been a long time since I read that paper, I did not study it to pass an exam LOL so did not remember him mentioning ... transduction. Sure the higher order harmonics are at a lower/amplitude, just as well or they would drown out the fundamental The point I am trying to make...

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

Regarding this statement which is incorrect: "Perhaps, but picking up audible frequencies (pressure wave energy) any other way besides our ears has not been discovered yet." You will agree I am sure that the long accepted rule is that we can hear from 20 to 20K but that is a generalisation...

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

@Sarel, you are missing the point! I don't understand why you would mention transduction and rectification which has nothing to do with this topic. Have you ever tried a supertweeter that goes out to 60K and beyond? Neither I nor the info in the link I provided claim that it's possible to...

The 7 Frequency Zones - Understand, Broaden Your Knowledge...

Hi guys, below is a link to an important article and should be required reading for anybody interested in good sound, which I think means all of us. I often read uninformed comments stating 'why bother with high frequencies when I can only hear to 12Khz.' This stance indicates a lack of...

Are Vintage Speakers Like Vintage Tyres?

@ HOTaljaard, I lived in Durban my whole life but now live in Ireland, where it's always raining and cold! @ 2BAlive, Celestion, Tannoy, Kef 104, and most early British stuff like Spendor, Wharfedale, Heybrook etc. Most any really old and some not so old speakers will respond well to a XO...

Are Vintage Speakers Like Vintage Tyres?

There are a number of great vintage speakers that are worth restoring and the XO will provide the most improvement. It's not only the caps that age that need replacing but also the orientation of the coils, better internal wiring and definitely change out those nasty sand-cast resistors. The...

    JHB Cable Listening Experiment

Your online demeanor leaves much to be desired. Care to explain yourself. Are you saying that you have no reason to think that? or are you saying that nobody has a reason to think that. Do you seriously think that all the thousands of people claiming they can hear the difference between cables...
