    Beautiful heatsinks? Let's make some!

Hi all, I am just about recovered from this round of the Bubonic plague (black death) they are calling the common flue these days.  Man, I was down and out for about a week and I can tell you that I am not someone who easily stays in bed... All the pictures up to this point was done manually...

    Beautiful heatsinks? Let's make some!

Lol  ;D    There is a word I am trying to remember...  I wonder if you could help me?  It rhymes with Koos  Update: Next job is to drill 12mm holes from the face of the stock which intersect the 20mm holes: ...and then I mill a slot between the middle pairs of holes...

    Beautiful heatsinks? Let's make some!

...continued from above... So after all that squaring up work we need to check whether the stock really is square.  I use a DIN graded machinist square against a bright light in the background to check.  Left side: Right side: Looks good to me! Next I drill 8mm diameter pilot holes -...

    Beautiful heatsinks? Let's make some!

Hi Gents, This project has been commissioned by a customer of mine and he has agreed that the photos be shared. I need to make a chassis for a PALADIN SM-150 stereo amplifier, and this here will document the machining of the heatsinks. I need 2x heatsinks sized around 410mm wide x 150mm tall...

Please excuse the quality of the photos - its off my phone.  Finger prints all over, cables hanging around, etc - not the best presentation, but it gives you an idea  ;) Just to give you a sense of how big these speakers are - the width is 74 cm.  They are really big...

Sorry Meneer!  Oversight on my part - I didn't realize that I hadn't posted a pic with the drivers installed.  I will make some time to take a couple pics today and post them  :2thumbs: Well, I am not one to hide things, so let's try and break this down: The drivers have a combined shipping...

Thanks everyone for following this build and encouraging me with your kind words!  I started this project in mid January and it has taken a tremendous amount of effort and determination to get them to the stage they are in now.  Once this is completely over and done with I don't know what I will...

Crossover development underway: Now that I have the dipole (OB) frequency response anomalies sorted out in the crossover, things are starting to become interesting quickly!  I won't say anything definitive about the sound until I tweak the crossovers a bit more, but for now it looks like...

Thanks everyone for your kind words  :dop: Spending the day in CT today so no further progress until the weekend I am afraid... What I can tell you is that having the drivers with no crossover playing sounds pretty horrendous. I tried the midrange on its own and because of the dipole peak...

This is a drawing of what I think the super tweeter bracket will look like.  I will just use some of the Teak I have left (from making the ribs) so the colors tie in. What do you think? Kind regards, Ian.

    wiring requirements?

Coax can work as long as you use only 1 of them. Don't use 2 tweeters - that won't work well because of comb filtering (constructive and destructive interference). Kind regards, Ian.

Thanks everyone! It took a long time and a huge amount of work, but things are getting near now.  Today I am making a mounting bracket for the super tweeter and mounting that after which I can start with measurements for crossover design. Will post more pics later. Kind regards, Ian.

    wiring requirements?

I don't really understand what you are asking about the 2 way on the mids?  Perhaps you can draw a picture or something? The main issue everyone is discussing is that the midrange and tweeter drivers are spaced too far apart.  Whatever else you do, you need to get the drivers closer together...

    How to choose speaker drivers?

Chamfer is fine!  Agreed that veneer has a tough time going around a small radius. Otherwise everything sounds perfect.  Keep up the good work  Kind regards, Ian.

    How to choose speaker drivers?

Your build quality looks very good to me - well done  I have some constructive feedback on the design: 1.  The driver spacing is a bit much.  Next time try to get the drivers nice and close to each other. This helps with crossover design, lobing, etc. 2.  If your midrange is open...

    wiring requirements?

What you need to ask yourself is what exactly you want out of this set of speakers: 1. Visually imposing and sounds OK,  but not high fidelity: keep the cabinets as they are. 2. Must sound good, don't care how it looks: you need to change the layout as recommended by others here. 3. Must...
