I need to spend more time on the setup. I just quickly level matched the 2. The bass sounds a bit fuzzier - but it might just be a setup issue.

Yes they both depreciate ridiculously fast. In ht high end AVRs more than anything else. Probably only way to get around it is to own your stuff a long time. I used to buy 2nd hand to get round the first round of depreciation but that has it own risks. Im driving the same hilux for 10 years...

Yes there is something i prefer in the older marantz's for stereo. A fuller sound.

After testing more at home i think now it was actually just different levels on the amps. So mostly stupidity from my side. Dedicated stereo is probably the way to go for music in the long run.

Thanks guys for all the input. I went home over lunch and repeated the experiment. I was wrong in saying I had direct mode on, stereo mode was on in both (without audyssey). When I went direct mode it sounded identical. And sounded very good. I think the sr6013 does additional processing the...

I will also turn of eco modes completely - maybe that setting is worked into the pre-amp too in some way.

I'll do the test again where I try to match the volumes and see if it makes a difference. Though I seem to remember the levels were quite similar.

Seems like they both have the AKM AK4458 DACs. I'm starting to think I'm crazy and should repeat the test between the two.

Yes it sounds to me that even in direct mode there is some processing - which really there shouldnt be. Or maybe they use different DACs. Does anybody know of the top of their heads if they do use different DACs?

Thats what Im doing now, using the AVRs as just processors.  But it is worrying that the two AVRs sound different - makes me wonder if a processor wouldnt be better too.

The only difference really between 7014 and 6014 I think is the power ratings (and more speakers which in your case will be useless). The power difference in them was definitely audible for me so it is important. If you have a smallish room and sensitive speakers it probably wont make much...

If the processors were not so expensive compared to the AVRs I probably would not buy an AVR ever again. For me theres a bigger difference between the 6000 series and 7000 - 7000 was good enough without a power amp for me (in a big difficult room). Though I'm sold on power amps now. On a...
