Impressions: do kilobuck DAPs make a difference?

PART 3 of 3 Closing thoughts It was, first and foremost, a privilege for me to get the opportunity to spend this time with devices that are so niche in this country, I doubt more than a small handful of them even exist here. In fact, I don?t know anyone else who owns ? let alone uses ? a LPGT...

Impressions: do kilobuck DAPs make a difference?

PART 2 of 3 Getting down to details I spent a full day just getting to know these two very different beasts, and it was during this time that most of my early impressions were baked-in, so to speak. But, as anyone who spends any sort of time in this hobby knows, first impressions aren?t...

Impressions: do kilobuck DAPs make a difference?

PART 1 of 3 These are my not-so-brief impressions of the Lotoo PAW Gold Touch and Hifiman R2R2000 DAPs. If you?re into super-high-end mobile audio or just curious about what sort of music player you can buy for eye watering money, read on. (Hint: jump to the end of the article for the TL;DR)...

Bluetooth and USB headphone DAC advice

Bluetooth is indeed still some way off from lossless. And LDAC/LDHC is the best version of BT right now (and one you should insist on if you want maximum quality for your music). Most Android 8.1+ phones support LDAC natively, so that's not an issue; the hard part is finding a headphone that...

Did you consider the Sony WH-1000XM4?

    Sony wh 1000xm4

Wonder when this will show up in SA? And at what price? I think I might finally dip my toes into the world of wireless ANC headphones with this one. Seems to have all the features down pat. But probably won't wait for it to show up locally.

    Project Battery

The M11 is definitely a step up from smartphones, and throw UAPP into the mix and you're set. I wouldn't use DAP without it. And with the latest firmware (released a couple of days ago) MQA is system wide as far as I know. Should work with the Tidal app and through UAPP as well.

    Project Battery

Thanks for sharing Nitin. Really glad the M11 is serving you well, and now it even supports UAPP, Play Services and MQA. Good luck with everything moving forward.

    Topping A90 a game changer?

I wouldn't bother pairing an R2R-11 with an NFB-1. You're wasting the balanced circuitry in the NFB-1, although it will be an upgrade over the R2R-11's amp section. The R-28 is a direct upgrade from the R2R-11 in every way, and gives you the added benefit of using balanced headphones. As for...

FiiO FD1 review: an entry-level IEM for audiophiles

    Topping A90 a game changer?

Yeah, the volume pot is not TERRIBLE, but I'd personally swap it out if it was my amp. I only have the HD800 as my desktop set. More of a mobile/IEM listener most of the time. I'm sure capetownwatches will chime in with some impressions with other headphones. There should be a few more of these...

    Topping A90 a game changer?

All aboard the hype train: my impressions of the Topping A90 WARNING: this is a long article (3,300 words to be exact). If you?d rather skip over my flowery descriptions, jump straight to the last section (?Get off the train?) for a TL;DR of sorts. Ok so I finally managed to snag a weekend...

    Comply Foam Tips

I bring them in direct from Dekoni (in bulk). Just bought a bunch for my own use but I sometimes have a few more than I need.

    Comply Foam Tips

Dekoni are definitely better than Comply. They last longer, are washable, and don't change the sound as much as Comply. Also more comfy (for me). I tried every type of Comply until I chanced on Dekoni.

FiiO FD1 review: an entry-level IEM for audiophiles

Especially when they're in stock at Amazon you can get them landed for R1500 ($59 + $35 shipping and duties). Or $79 with free shipping from Alixpress (though I wouldn't even chance free stuff to the SA Post Office right now). And we wonder why the SA head-fi market is so small and stunted  :sd:

FiiO FD1 review: an entry-level IEM for audiophiles

Hey guys, Thought you might be interested in my rather wordy review of the FiiO FD1, an entry-level IEM tuned for audiophiles. You'll find it here: http://theheadonist.com/2020/07/21/review-fiios-entry-level-fd1-a-well-tuned-classy-surprise I think FiiO's entry-level stuff is a cut above most...

    IEM's - not for everyone?

In my experience there are alot of cheap and nasty 'Chi-Fi' IEMs that end up sounding cheap and nasty. Bloated bass with no mids and spiky treble are common symptoms. That's not to say you can't get great sounding cheap IEMs, but you need to do your research. Aside from quality drivers and...
