Paul Hanmer - Trains to Taung (2LP Deluxe Edition)

Thank you for the reminder to order it from Mr Vinyl!

One of the strangest LP’s out there.

Especially with the reissue. Mr Vinyl has stock on hand, at very reasonable price (these days, for new vinyl) https://www.mrvinyl.co.za/shop/jack-white-lazaretto-2/

One of the strangest LP’s out there.

Got one too. This is how the album was released in 2014, so anyone who has it, has this pressing. Looks like the 2024 repress has the same features. Should be freely available, your fave local shop can probably still source it. Worst case. Juno has it in stock. (As an aside, one of the most...

MusicCast - Tidal FLAC fully resolved

I suspect it’s a Tidal issue. You can try wired connection to the router, but I can’t conclusively say it will solve the issue. That said… I sometimes have niggles streaming hi-res Tidal to wifi devices, but IIRC I haven’t had that issue with my AVR, which is wired.

MusicCast - Tidal FLAC fully resolved

It is technically possible for the 5Ghz wifi to be faster and better optimised than 100Mbps ethernet, but it is not universally likely to be better for all users. 5Ghz offers its benefits only over shorter distances, so unless the AVR is close to the router, it’s better to use 2.4Ghz or...

Lets create a forum playlist for 2024

There were several very good albums, but the ones that will remain in rotation for me (i.e. both good AND likely to remain on repeat) are the 2024 releases by The Cure, Bruce Dickinson, The The and Alcest. With honourable mention to Fokofpolisiekar, Fontaines DC, Ride and St Vincent.

    Valve audio expertise required

Sorry, forgot to add my reasoning for going for Predator over Exclame. It was never a question, actually. I had heard a Predator/Whisper combo in one of my absolute favourite reference systems (a friend’s). When a used Predator came up for sale, I grabbed it. The order for a Whisper was placed...

    Valve audio expertise required

As an owner of an upgraded (to near-latest spec, with two balanced inputs) and modded (improved valves and caps) Predator, I am able to admit that there are different, and perhaps even better, amps out there. But I would never describe it as lazy or laid-back… I have not been able to compare...

Disney+ and Tidal on Apple TV vs PS5

In my experience, music via the Tidal app on Apple TV sounds better than the Apple Music app on ATV, except for multi-channel (Atmos) stuff, for some reason that sounds terrible (Tidal may have addressed it since). But then you are controlling the ATV apps on the device itself. If you have an...

Valve Audio Predator - Speaker Pairing

Has it gone through its burn-in period? Mine took a bit of a dip as the valves settled, then opened up.

What comes first - the source or the speaker?

I agree, you can never put back what you lose at the source. I have heard amazing source/amp combos with relatively modest speakers, and they sounded great. I have also heard amazing speakers with modest sources and/or limiting amps and have been underwhelmed. Not always, but more likely...

Valve Audio Predator - Speaker Pairing

You took a statement (“my Predator deserves more”), took umbrage, and declared it as nonsense. (All your words). You only backed off when OP indulged you with a reply. I was merely pointing out that “my <insert equipment here> deserves more” could in fact be objectively justifiable, so to...

Valve Audio Predator - Speaker Pairing

Not very constructive to declare a post as "nonsense" just because you feel defensive about a particular brand. The FS150 is a R10k speaker paired with a R78k Predator. They are both excellent products in their own right, but all things being equal, it is highly likely that the Predator will...

    Klipsch RP 280f Vs B&W 683 S2

I typed this into ChatGPT: “If you can get either of these speakers for similar price, but without the opportunity to audition them, how would you describe the Klipsch RP 280f Vs B&W 683 S2, and under which conditions would you pick either? Assume they’ll be used for both movies and music.”...

    Klipsch RP 280f Vs B&W 683 S2

It’s not just about amps. Speakers tend to have a particular tonality; at similar prices it’s not about which is “better” or “worse”, but about which suits you best. You may prefer B&W even with a smaller amp if that’s the kind of sound you enjoy. So if you cannot listen to them, you may have...

    AV Equipment & Insurance

Maybe you misread my post - this not about "under-insuring". It is, like @DarrenB said, about insuring for the reasonable replacement value of the item you own, NOT insuring your current item for the replacement value of a newer far more expensive model. And definitely not about insuring for a...

Luxman PD272 vs Pro-ject Debut Carbon Acrylic: which would you keep, and why?

The “liveliness” is probably a mix of the whole package - a very cable deck, arm, and the advantage of an MC cart, even if high output. It seems like you have your answer on the deck! Apologies, my research wasn’t thorough, the Benz is, even as an entry level cart at the time, a better overall...

Luxman PD272 vs Pro-ject Debut Carbon Acrylic: which would you keep, and why?

I haven't heard either, and the obvious answer is to keep the one that brings the biggest smile to your face. I have made the choice a couple of times now, when it came to keeping particular pressings of favourite albums, to keep the pressing that sounded more "clear and detailed". Only to...
