Grounding/Earthing a Portable Generator & Cable Required for Permanent Installation

Thanks, I'll use surfix and tell the sparky there's no need for a separate earth spike.

Grounding/Earthing a Portable Generator & Cable Required for Permanent Installation

I plan to have my 6.5kVa generator permanently connected to my house using a changeover switch at the distribution board. I've asked two electricians to give me a quote for the work. The first has included the installation of an earth spike on his quote because he reckons the generator needs to...

    Hellmans Mayo

Which Spar is that? I've been wanting to try a jar to see what all the fuss is about but I haven't found stock anywhere.

What to do with old plasma TV?

Then isn’t Discamery just as guilty and unethical for rejecting claims resulting from power surges but they do not require surge protectors to be installed as a prerequisite for cover? I’m all for the adage that two wrongs don’t make a right but if Discamery doesn’t actually provide cover for...

What to do with old plasma TV?

With all due respect, how is it insurance fraud? @Epistemic made it clear that the damage assessors reported that the power supply is damaged likely as a result of power surges, which likely damaged the PCB. Ergo, a power surge was likely the cause of the damage. If power surges are covered in...

    Durban Bunny Chows

Does the Irish at Rock Cottage do the same thing?

    Durban Bunny Chows

So many good suggestions in this thread - and they're all close to me! I can add Swagat at Palm Court in Weltevredenpark if you want a pretty decent bunny. Not entirely relevant to this chat but there used to be a dodgy looking little joint at the corner of South and Rivonia Roads which made...

    Good practice electricity outage protection

Thanks very much. I suppose the same thing applies when switching from the generator back to the mains, unless the switch-over is truly instant?

    Good practice electricity outage protection

On this note, for those who have manual-start generators plumbed into their houses which need to be manually switched over, what steps do you recommend people take to avoid damaging fridges through sudden de-pressurisation and re-pressurisation?

    Used Volvo's: safe to buy?

There's an interesting thread over on CarForums about an Australia-based guy who's bringing a C70 T5 back to life: Next project underway - I need help... Updated 16 Oct - CARforums.co.za

    Orders on Raru

I've heard this from more than one person now - Raru jumps when the Ombud gets involved. Did you approach the CGSO specifically?

    Orders on Raru

The principal reason I despise Takealot is the driving behaviour of their delivery men and women, especially the Mr D motorcyclists.

ABSA sucks (and rocks at the same time), any suggestions for a better bank?

The less I can interact with my bank, the better. Nedbank is great in that respect. The app works well, the call centre is responsive when I need it to be and the account offerings are suitable to me. Particularly the basic Just Invest account which gives a pretty good interest rate with fast...

    Joburg burger lovers

Thanks for the heads-up - I'll give both Bev's and Oz a try. I can't believe Oz is in such a dodgy little centre, though. The place really hit the skids when Craft Beer Library relocated from there to Linden central.

Recommend a Multiple Input HDMI Switch

Thank you, gents. I'm considering all the options. The HDCVT one, per @shunpillay, I've seen on a number of sites locally so I may start with that one, based on the advice here, and if it doesn't work properly, I'll shell out for the Alfatron 3x1 switch, per @grumpybear.

Recommend a Multiple Input HDMI Switch

My problem, in brief: my AVR, a Denon X1200W, has too few HDMI inputs. I've bought a few gaming consoles recently and need to connect them up. I've also moved my PC to the lounge where I intend to use it every so often. All the devices rely on HDMI for their outputs so I now need an additional...

    Audi Q7 Head unit upgrade

I'm a big fan of SA car audio - there are undoubtedly loads of talented manufacturers and installers here. What I'm not a fan of is rebranded Chinese-import touchscreens that have poor UIs, are inadequately designed (who puts a reset button on the face of a head unit right next to the...

    Audi Q7 Head unit upgrade

OP didn't mention whether the standard MMI system in his Q7 has satnav or not. My Kenwood units were fitted into vehicles (a 1997 Corolla and a 2013 Swift Sport) where the original unit functions purely as in-car entertainment: they do not control any functions of the vehicle, like air-con or...

    Audi Q7 Head unit upgrade

You make a good point but why take a risk you can comfortably avoid? It is a cheap, Android-based unit with an unknown reputation and build-quality. The fact that it is local-only means it's also unlikely that there'll be support forums where plenty of other users discuss issues with the units...

    Audi Q7 Head unit upgrade

I was worried that that may be the case. It's likely better to get a little Bluetooth receiver that outputs to the auxiliary-in/3.5mm port if the Q7 has one.
