HEAR HEAR - The sound difference acoustics makes

Sound proofing and treatment are completely different things as Rudi rightly points out. SA available rockwool has a huge variability in flow resistivity and its easier to err on the side of caution. Also in perforated membrane panels it can improve absorption to the upper bass. However with...

    Joke of the day?

This is ideological. They did however sell out to the arms industry in countries that sheltered them in stead of building and provide proper education and infrastructure for those that decades later are now left behind...before they figured out why send the loaned and tax moneys overseas when...

It's all about media advocacy and playing the victim game.

Vodacom uncapped LTE package bugger up

The only way to deal with this is to get the cash back and return to a scratch situation unfortunately. Ask the manager or person you're dealing with for a reference number for an ICASA case and get the ICASA automated system to give you a number. That helps in dealing with the call centers and...

    Speaker recommendation questions

Klipsch have given some serious attention to their larger stereo designs, they were falling behind too far and they have done some thoughtful re-engineering. It is still very much "sounding" but among the commercial contenders they can be quite a bit of fun.

    JHB Meet and greet

Perhaps suggest a date/time and some of those a bit further out can see whether it can be fit in with other arrangements?

    Vertical Amps

Max Wilgen still sells the Audio Geometry units. All discrete with add-in cards. I use one for mid-bass-woofer crossover. Conveniently it has PEQ and mono-woofer sum features as well.

    Vertical Amps

There are two distinct targets for optimization for horns with depth discrepancies: Time alignment by mechanical means (aka aligned voice coils) and by delay/filter phase trickery. The parallax error of the acoustical center/delayed radiation means that the aligned voice coils have poor (often...

    Any Garagiste on the forum?

With beer a large determinant of the style is the yeast strain and process control (temperature/pressure) around the fermentation. Do you control environmental variables during fermentation? I assume you have to start with grapes in a press to get the wild yeast? So do you take a sanitized...

    Any Garagiste on the forum?

I know winemakers who perform two consecutive pitches of yeasts, one to create aromatic precursors and one to bio-convert them. Wild-fermenting wine....I dunno. How do you prevent infection and what control do you have over flavour of the outcome?

    Vertical Amps

You have a high dynamic range system, gain structure needs to fit regardless of what topology one looks at. I personally try avoud two things on most horns: buzz and high output impedance. The latter can be managed on lower efficiency types, but buzz and noise...not so much.

    Any Garagiste on the forum?

Beer, yes, not brave enough to do wine just yet.

    Vertical Amps

imo, with few exceptions valves and active driven horns are a difficult marriage. Post filter feedback Class D however...on a battery supply....yes. Key is to sort out the gain structure. If one doesn't give attention to that, you might as well just chase the boutique aspect of this...

    SET Amps

My experience with ~9W SETs is that speaker impedance matters a whole lot and for most people 95dB (not out of Klipsch's marketing department either) is a bit of a watershed. Going over a few Watt typically brings on a fuzzyness to the sound, the kind that trains one to turn it back a notch. For...

    Vertical Amps

The time delay is the key sticking point. Unfortunately horns have depth which means that for proper integration one can only push the phase so hard with tricks until one needs a delay...or accept the interference (as many horns are perhaps more there for visuals' and loudness' sake than sound)...

Success! DIY project: Klipsch Cornwall in Cape Town

Wunderbar. Cheers to the Cpt Hifi Club for sorting this out.

    Cheap Audiophile System

I would stay away from a kitsch valve buffer stage tbh. Look for 3rd party tested units perhaps. The Ti 325x chips have great potential. Give them a good PSU and one is no longer limited to the realm of 20W chip amps.

    Cheap Audiophile System

When one works to a budget, I think the TPA32xx amps are a great way to hook up to some decent used loudspeakers. With a clean supply and a bit of luck regards the board manufacture these can be astounding little amps. Post filter feedback, hypex eat your heart out. It's an exciting time for...
