Over powering speakers on a long term basis

In most cases speakers are damaged by receiving too much power. Whether the signal is clipped or clean doesn't really matter. IMO the relevant question has always been "Where does the power come from?" When you push an amplifier into clipping its power output continues to rise which may seem...

    ADDING A POWER AMP

This is called a "strawman argument"- misrepresenting an opponents true position by fabricating an imaginary one in its place. Also very disingenuous of you. In my experience people don't always know when they have enough power. Many have this romantic idea in their minds that speakers have...

    ADDING A POWER AMP

Earlier you seemed oblivious to the technical (and audible) advantages of high-passing large main speakers. You continue to miss the point. The OP has confirmed he is not experiencing audible problems that would indicate to us that his amplifier is ill-equipped to drive his speakers. Talk...

    ADDING A POWER AMP

The more pertinent question is : where are all these truly full range speakers that can outperform a good subwoofer in the lowest octaves? The answer is ... very, very few. High-passing the main speakers, even physically large units, can significantly lower distortion when handling LF signals...

    ADDING A POWER AMP

I see you edited your post but unfortunately I didn't see it in time.

    ADDING A POWER AMP

Your recommendation was bizarre by dint of the fact that the OP already indicated he is not experiencing audible problems relating to headroom or anything else. But you recommended he buy a power amp anyway. That is bizarre. His Jamo speakers are a benign load if I ever saw one. You then...

    ADDING A POWER AMP

Instead of splurging on a power amp you don't need I would rather consider the following : Address your room acoustics. Do some research. Consider playing around with subwoofer positioning if you can - if you want to learn how to better integrate your subwoofer with your mains without guessing...

    ADDING A POWER AMP

    What a bizarre recommendation.

    ADDING A POWER AMP

If your amp was distorting (clipping) audibly at the volumes you enjoy then that would be a good sign your amplifier is running out of steam. Adding a power amp would make sense. Not before. If you are observing no audible problems at the volumes you enjoy then you have answered your question.

    Subwoofer POrt Air Flow

Even the flagship PB16 Ultra can have audible port chuffing if driven hard enough with excessive ULF content - especially at/near the tuning point.

SvS, WoW they make good subs!

Exactly, it's a fools errand / chasing shadows. That's why I chuckle when I hear the word "accuracy" when talking about artificial stereo constructs.  ;D

SvS, WoW they make good subs!

Blizzard, please explain to us how you are verifying "accuracy" of each recording you play back, to the "intent of the artist/engineer".  ;) Two speakers operating in a living room at positions that optimize midrange spectral balance and imaging are highly unlikely to have good performance in...

SvS, WoW they make good subs!

Usually with limited dynamic range at those frequencies compared to a good large subwoofer. :) More importantly the place you put your speakers for optimum performance from 200Hz and above is rarely the same place you would put them for optimum performance below 200Hz, IME. 1) A significant...

    Need some A/V advise please

Any modern AVR can potentially drive your speakers well (ie without audible distortion). How much power you'll need (as always) is highly dependent on the following  : 1) How loud you listen? 2) How large your room is? 3) How far you sit in the room? 4) Whether bass management is used or not...

    AV Processors - Expensive

The market for preamp/processors is tiny compared to the market for AVR's. They are niche items. Now factor in the economies of scale - manufacturers make far more receivers than dedicated processors, so the cost of receivers can be far less than similarly featured processors. Economies of...
