    Gas vs. Induction Hobs

There has been a lot of support for gas in this thread but... Firstly, it is not as cheap as is made out by people. Gas prices are shooting up all the time and burning the stuff causes a double pollution problem - firstly from creating the gas here in RSA because we don't have natural gas...

Looking for DVD and SACD dealer in Northcliff Johannesburg

Hi, some time back I found a reference to a business operating out of a house in Northcliff, close to Norman Avenue, selling second hand CDs and DVDs. I can't find that reference now, whihc I think I found in this forum. Anybody know who and where it is? Thanks so much.

    Spdif Cable

"is their some science or law of the universe in how they should be "twisted"" . I'm not an expert but based on what I have read, a twisted pair cable is twisted to reduce inductance effects, typically from other cables that may run alongside it. The technique was originally used on telegraph...

    News from Luxman

Amazing that a company involved in sound has survived for so long. I had a Luxman direct drive turntable once. The tone arm was so friction less that a small wave of my hand over it would cause it to move. It was synchronised to mains frequency and thus it's rotational speed used to slowly...

    Members' Kit pics

That looks like a very fine bookshelf. Please tell, was it supplied as a kit? If not, where did you source that high quality plywood and the speakers? I see on the link provided by Soundblab, to the speaker supplier, that they quote over R5000 per driver, only sold in lots of 50 at a time!

    How to ship to USA?

As far as I know, all modern electronics will function on 50 or 60 Hz. Mains power is converted into DC power through transformers and capacitor networks and the input frequency wont matter. Older TV sets though might have problems in synchronising scanning lines. Switching power supplies such...

Apple Music Lossless Sounds "Fuzzy" To Me

Just taking a shot in the dark here, you say the fuzziness is a periodic phenomonen. Cables and signal source are constants so could your power supply be the culprit?

    Passive radiator repair

Over the years, I have both seen and read about perished foam plastic surrounds. They are obviously rubbish, regardless of speaker brand. One would be well advised to avoid any speakers which use this type of material.

AVR in Stereo Only - which is best

Interesting advice. Your statements sound as if you are implying that Audyssey is geared towards loudspeaker adjustment per se, whereas in fact, Audyssey is making adjustments to compensate for the room acoustics i.e. Audyssey is first and foremost, room tuning software, not loudspeaker tuning...

    Disney+

I've just started watching Disney+ on a Samsung smart TV. The Disney channel app has been added on in a recent update. I dont get 5.1 sound, only stereo (watching Boba Fett). By report, other watchers seem to get 5.1 sound on Android systems. Any other Samsung owners experiencing this...

    Denon X2600h - strange behavior

Thanks for that comprehensive response. From what you said, it appears that dynamic EQ is applicable to movie sound tracks only. I've noticed that with music, dynamic EQ produces stronger bass and treble, which can be excessive on some pieces of music.

    Disney 'Exit' button

I tried Disney + for the first time last night, on samsung TV and was able to get out of it by pressing the return button on the Sammy remote (located to bottom left of the back button) until 'exit' command appeared on screen. One more press and Disney shut down.

    Denon X2600h - strange behavior

"Once you have gone though this and everything works, rerun the Audyssey calibration from scratch. Make sure Dynamic Volume is disabled and Dynamic EQ is enabled" Why do you advise Dynamic EQ to be Enabled? All it does is boost treble and bass. It is a loudness control.

    5.1 Surround on Youtube

Thanks for the reference. I checked your link on Friday and it played in 5.1. But on Saturday, it refused to go beyond stereo (on the free version of YT). Various net references suggest that YouTube was going to allow 5.1 videos starting in 2021 but i have not been able to find any since Friday.

Shopping from Shenzhen Audio vs. from Amazon USA.

I've been given advice on this forum to buy a Dac from Shenzhen Audio. The item in question (Topping E30 Dac) is advertised for the same price by both Shenzhen Audio and from a dealer using Amazon USA as their outlet. Shenzhen says no charge for shipping but 3 to 6 weeks waiting period. Has...

Ideas, opinions and guidance sought re upgrading a CD player

Thanks, even though as you say, your experience is subjective, it is good to know that a user of good quality equipment can hear a change for the better with a quality add on Dac.

Ideas, opinions and guidance sought re upgrading a CD player

My thanks to forum members who generously shared their advice. Certainly has given me food for thought. Are there any SA dealers who stock the Chinese DACs mentioned?
