I would get stands for the bookshelfs, put them next to the tv stand and toe them in slightly. You'll get a much better centre stage. Bass might be less then what it can be seeing that there's no wall behind them, but some bookshelfs work well like that depending on the room.

Nope, to me a speaker must look bloody good too as it's always there, in full view of everyone and most importantly, myself. That's what I don't get with some manufacturers. Their speakers cost an arm and a leg and may sound great but looks like ****. Really? Could you not make it more pleasant...

The MA's should give you more detail and better midrange than the Sony's, so if they're in great condition and price is good then go for it. I would take MA over Sony anyday.

Just make it compulsory to post a picture of the actual item, it must be one of the rules. A potential buyer will ask for a pic of the actual item sooner or later anyway. And yes I agree, take 5 min and clean the item. Posting a pic of a dusty amp with greasy finger prints everywhere makes me...
