    Kwikot Econocoil Geyser Element

Where would the "lost" energy go? Most devices are not 100% efficient, and all the waste energy goes to heat. So if a heater is not 100% efficient in converting e.g. 1kW of electricity into 1kW of heat energy, what happens to it?

    Wristwatch,any love?

Here is the "crown" of my tiny collection. It is a Ulysse Nardin "Locle" It is huge, 47mm OD, 14mm max thickness. It comes from the time when pocket watches were just starting to change into wrist watches (which is obvious when you look at it). A watchmaker showed me in a book that the...

    English 101: to vs too

There's a new trend in SA, a lot of people seem to be selling all their stuff because they are immigrating... And at work a lot of (some very English) people will end an email with something like "so how do we tackle this issue, please advice" What (also) irks me is that people are starting to...

Could not have been more difficult the watching the whole of "The Lighthouse"

    Nivico (by JVC) anyone?

Yes, on the back of this one it says "Victor Company of Japan". I can't help but wonder what Nivico stood for... NI???? VIctor COmpany...

    Nivico (by JVC) anyone?

Hello, I have an opportunity to get a Nivico Receiver model 5001. This is a circa early 1970's solid state amp & tuner. Would there be any interest in such a receiver? (Assuming it works 100% and looks neat) And of course - any suggestions on a value? These pics from the web, since the...

    So, who uses subtitles?

I have my centre channel 2 or 3 dB louder than the rest - helps a bit When there is a choice, a foreign film in original language + subtitles is usually a lot better than watching it with a dubbed soundtrack.

Which battery has longest life expectancy: lead acid, gel, Lithium ion?

Has anyone made a study of "2nd life" batteries yet? I stumbled onto them and it sounds promising. They say they are LiFePO4 cells that were used in cars, lost about 30% capacity therefore no longer good for EV. Then repacked into "stationary" batteries. Still have a good guarantee & very long...

Vinyl sales exceed CDs in 2022

My son's friend also attends vinyl fests and have been collecting LPs. He has no proper player, just a cheap USB thingy. When I recently had a decent Pioneer turntable to get rid of I asked him if he wanted to start a proper hi-fi system (for free), but it seemed the vinyl is just for...

Surround Sound sample test material - where to find?

Thanks Eish, In my current setup I use the HDMI only for video (directly to TV), sound goes via coaxial from the mede8er to the amp. Main reason I guess is that the amp is not always on. But I see your point - I just need to dangle an HDMI cable from the amp for test purposes, or when a source...

Surround Sound sample test material - where to find?

Hi All, Is there a good place to find some free surround sound demo tracks? I need a "Left Front, Center, Right Front...." type of thing more than an impressive set of explosions. In my current setup I often lose a speaker connection (cats, cleaner...) and then realise it once family movie...

    Lithium batteries for alarm special

Hi All, Here some battery feedback. I have 2 alarm systems in my house - a 16 zone IDS alarm that is about 16 years old, and a Paradox alarm which is about 12 years old. I always got the idea that batteries last longer in the Paradox (years). I changed both for these new green Securi-Prod...

    Inferior quality from China

I had exactly the same experience and feel the same now. No scruples, they don't think in terms of long term relationships (not possible anyway because they just dissolve the company who scammed you, pretend to be all new, and find a new sucker who will buy from them), but only about the next...

    Gas geyser VS Solar geyser

Our solar installation (200liters under the roof, 2 flat panels op the roof, angled as best as possible towards North & sitting at 45Degrees to get the most of the winter sun in Cape Town, pumped with geyser-wise controller), has what they called a "tempering valve" - it is basically an...

    wireless rear AV speakers

Thanks Drifter! I've read up a bit and it seems all the options have caveats. E.g. power cables. I am beginning to think chasing in conduits while building might actually be the easy solution! It's a pity that you don't get rechargable battery operated rear surround speakers - it should last...

    wireless rear AV speakers

Hi All, We are renovating, and getting wires neatly to the rear speakers of my AV setup is going to be tricky (chasing conduits in the floor or something). I have a small setup with compact Jamo A102 HCS5 speaker set, and a Marantz NR1501 AV amp, which is sufficient for my movie requirements...

    Lithium batteries for alarm special

I charged them all up with the same 12V Lead Acid smart charger, with "Standard Battery" selected. Being a drop in replacement for LA I felt that is appropriate. They get full quite suddenly (relative to LA). Then these specific tests I discharged at 3Amp - dunno if that is good or bad - just...
