    Generator supply to inverter

I have seen a number of issues using the typical 5.5kVA petrol DIY generator on an inverter. Every time it has been frequency control. Those little petrol gen sets have very poor governor control.

New Years Cape Town Accommodation Suggestions

From Christmas to a few days after New Year that stretch of road from Sea Point to Llandudno will take you three hours - one way. Been there, done that. Our favorite spot in Hermanus is Misty Waves. Don't book "The Annex" though, must be in the main hotel. Sky View Bar is good. La Pentola is one...

    'Scope and signal gen

Hi Guys I had to do a job this evening and I realized that my old kit is really getting old. My one signal gen I built from an Everyday Electronics design in about 1981. No cap changes since then!!! My other is a more professional Philips PM1532 - works well. My scope is a Tektronix 2225. I...

    Ribbon speaker cables - benefits?

Then there are those who insist on twisted pairs and screening. Flat ribbons are neither! As Baseline wisely advised - you decide!

    DIY isolation transformer

Transformers are astonishingly tough. 300VA will suit you well unless you are feeding a large valve amp with a lot of heater overheads etc, idle current in the output stages etc. For a typical modern amp 300VA will be fine, however, if you crank it up for 5 mins to 400VA peaks it won't even...

    small petrol engines with turbo.

AndreT: I like my big N/A engines. Mine I modded slightly to keep it 100% drivable on the street, everyday. Idles at 550rpm. However, there is in excess of 500Nm of torque just off idle (from less than 2000 where the test began) to 6000rpm, peaking at 580Nm. If you are prepared to live with a...

    Anybody recognise this circuit diagram?

Without drawing it out, I would guess some sort of oscillator or signal gen.

    Remote volume control for tuner

Thanks Handsome. That look like a good deal.

    DIY isolation transformer

Further to what Shaun was saying, with older 'scopes the "ground" clip was an issue frequently landing up with smoke coming out of the filtering cap in the scope, or damage to the unit under test. With VSDs, the negative rail is typically at half minus 560V and with plenty of current behind it...

    DIY isolation transformer

Jazzy, looking at the photos you posted, it looks like the input and output are connected on the same terminals, in which case, the transformer isn't doing a thing (other than humming and getting a little warm). Am I missing something?

    DIY isolation transformer

I suspect most UPS transformers will have a low voltage center-tapped primary. What are you trying to achieve? 230/230V isolation? How many VA?

    Heatpumps

I had a heat pump in my previous house. HP technology is the same as refrigeration. The coefficient of performance is in the order of 3:1. In other words, resistive heating has a COP of 1:1 - 1kWh of energy in equates to 1kWh of heating out. With the HP technology, 1kWh in equates to 3kWh in the...

Why can't I log in on my mobile device?

For years I have been able to access the AV site from my laptop and my mobile using the same log in credentials. Now, my mobile can't log on - says incorrect password. Tried and double checked the password many times. Help!

    Please Help with some Advice

If you really do need to regulate the voltage once you have found the source of the problem, consider an electro-mechanical voltage stabilizer. It is like an automatic motorized variac. It can step up or down.

    Please Help with some Advice

If you are dropping 30-50 Volts from one side of your house to the other, forget the amp - fix the house!!! If there are overloaded cables or bad joints, you are going to have a fire soon.

Ford did make a V4 engine, also used in the Corsair.

Cars that were tuned in South Africa

I don't believe the Capri was banned. GM brought out the Can-Am Firenza ±1972/3 with the fantastic 302CI (5000cc) high revving engine. Only made 100 of them. I owned one of these in the '80s. This was the most fun you could have ......
