The Rotel RA 971 has made a solid difference to the quality of the sound. I will still be looking at the pre-amp and better speakers in the longer term. For now...

Thanks for  the pre-amp idea. I do not know anything about pre-amps, so please excuse these questions: is it simple to connect a pre-amp to the Rotel RA-05; will special cables be required; and will it not be too much for the Mission 33i's? Thanks for the inputs thus far.
