Sub Woofer advice for HT and Listening room B&W ASW610 vs REL Q100e

The B&W sub got speaker level inputs which you will probably need to use for the vintage set-up, except if your vintage setup somehow offers a sub out.

What do you wish you knew when you started this journey?

If you have got a system that sounds good to your ears (i.e., as in what you prefer) stop right there. Upgrading the equipment sometimes removes the joy of the music it produce.

    No sound from DSTV Explora

The Explora struggles with some devices. Found the same issue on my Anthem processor. Video works bur no sound. Forced me to use the SPDIF output, which is fine for formats covered by the Explora.

    Mixing subwoofers...?

That's what's it about! Happy that it worked out for you. Enjoy!

    Mixing subwoofers...?

Try it. My mains and front sub are ported and the 2 subs (stacked) in the rear are sealed. Sounds great to me. Once the sound waves hit you it does not care about the origin, IMHO. I know some people are dead said against mixing sub designs and even models. For me it just seems to work.

Question re matching separates | Sensitivity & Impedance - Bi amping

I may worry about this unnecessarily, but should phase\timing between the power amps not also be matched? Not sure how big these differences can be between amps with different circuit designs, may not have that big an impact.

    HFX

I met Eugene many years ago when I made my first purchase from them. Used to be called Hi Fi Excellence at the time. True gentleman and Eugene is definitely the kind of person that put service excellence first. Also dealed with Jacques often and the same is true. Wayne is still there.

    How to connect a subwoofer?

You can download the manual from here https://www.bowerswilkins.com/en/product/loudspeakers/asw608 Figure 3 in the manual confirms what I said above.

    How to connect a subwoofer?

Normally you would only use the L input if there's no dedicated LFE input. You only need the one cable connected to LFE on your AVR.

    Load shedding and surge damage

I have experienced damage due to power surges, but do not think it was due to load shedding as we always switch off all the wall plugs (split on DB board) when load shedding starts and only switch it on about 5 minutes after load shedding ended for our area. That said, according to assessors the...

Bass management in HT: LFE vs. LFE + Main

As my fronts got build in subwoofwers mine is set to LFE+Main. When I tune the base I take this into consideration and my 15inch sub in the back only works below 40Hz in stereo. With 5.1 (or higher) my processor splits the bass between the (effectively) 3 subwoofwers. When I had (non active)...

What was your first Hifi and where did you buy it ?

My first hi-fi that I bought new (ie not left-over components from my dad) was from Andre (RIP) at Audiophile (which was stil in Ota central at the time) and consisted of the following: Nad turntable (the one with the flat tonearm) with a MC cartridge. Musical Fidelity integrated Amp (think it...

    Projector Screen Aspect Ratios

Start with your projectors native resolution, which probably would represent a 16:9 aspect ratio. The only way to change that to 2.35:1 (without loosing resolution) would be to add an external lens, I would think. Sent from my CLT-L29 using Tapatalk

    Doubling up on room EQ

Point is you are adding another conversion into digital and then back to analoue in the chain and it will affect the full frequency range. If it is only sub 40hz you are eq-ing I would not bother too much about this for music only listening. However - only your ears can make the final decision...

    Doubling up on room EQ

If I an understanding the setup, what you are doing is taking an analogue signal (pre-amp out) and making it digital in the Mini-DSP. There it is digitally processed and then returned to analogue via another digital to analogue chip. Problem is you are adding an AD conversion and another DA...

    Doubling up on room EQ

The problem I see with this is that you then introduce another A ?> D and then D -> A process in the signal chain for stereo only listening.  It may even be worse than simply using the HT processor as a pre-amp. I am not sure about this though as I do not know the quality of the signal and DA /...
