    The problem with upgrading to hi-end is that you can make significant improvements on upgrading budget and mid-fi components, but in hi-end you have to throw ever-larger wads of cash to get very small steps up.  So I would agree that it's best to find a plateau where you can sit back and enjoy...

    I don't know about the Tannoy, but my Energy subwoofer allows you to use an external crossover (simply a different socket on the sub). This bypasses the amp's xover and is set up automatically, reqiring no use of the sub's controls.  Have you checked "YES" for subwoofer on your speaker setup...
