I have always needed a 301, I picked one up this week. Mechanically it seems in great condition, everything seems tight, idler wheel is surprisingly good, 100% round, speed is stable, absolutely no noise whatsoever. I put together a very basic plinth just to get it up & spinning, and even as is it is sounding very good.
301/SME3009 S2 improved, Denon 301r (with 5G mass on the headshell)... very happy
.
Plans ahead are a "fancy" plinth and a repaint, color not decided. I'm going to make this plinth good enough to gain WAF and solid enough to do a decent job for a few months, while I plan further stages.
Question.... the 4 rubber washers between the TT and plinth. What would original ones be like (hard / soft)? The current ones are old and flush with the bottom of the table, so I can't see any isolation happening, also hard so I assume not really doing much. I have bought some rubber washers which fit 100%, probably a little thicker (plumbing). I know with the 401, they suggest mounting straight onto the surface (no washers).. any opinions / advice on this? do I just leave them out.
bad pic below..
