To my own embarrassment I had no answer to the question my brother asked me the weekend, "Why are car drivers 4 Ohm and HiFi drivers 8 Ohm?" This is probably a generalization but it is mostly true.
My gut feel told me that it had to do with the low voltage/high current power supply in a car vs the high voltage/lower current power supply in homes. I know one can get serious current from a 220V/15A supply so I was not convinced that that was the only reason if at all.
I'd like to know what the answer is to this question.
