My Mom has this tank, otherwise known as a Toyota Cressida 2.4 automatic. Been well looked after, always gets services. But the mechanic she always used to take it to has retired and now there's a new guy. Car has started to make this whining noise. Very loud to start with as the engine warms up, eases down a few decibels after awhile, but constantly there. Pitch of the whine keeps track with acceleration/decelleration.
The new mechanic has told her that the car's gearbox is going and that she'll have to replace it at some point. But the cost of that versus what the car is now worth makes it a pointless exercise in any event. I tried Googling the car's noise, but all results came back as a problem with the transmission fluid of the car, none of them mentioned gearbox issues. To me the sound is more what I'd expect from a belt or pulley that's going, but then what I know about cars is generally pretty dangerous :-\
Anyone here know whether a failing automatic gearbox will make this noise, or is it likely to be somethign else?
