A question regarding rectifiers if i may?

Is it best to convert from valve rectification to solid state for the purposes of power supply preservation,a happier running mains transformer etc?Won't the diode wreck the caps with its instant charge and cause premature valve failure...I may have asked this before,forgive me if I have...
