Posted this in response to Rupert's quest for an affordable dac - thought it might also be of interest to others.
Have been running the V-Dac MkII now with stock power supply for a week and it is extremely good. Very detailed yet balanced and, yes, "organic" and natural sounding. Besides optical and coaxial inputs it now also has a built-in asynchronous USB connection which sounds superb. I'm not good at the descriptive superlatives but to me it sounds as good as anything I've heard in recording studios live, directly from the floor or off proffessional recording equipment. Dynamicly it also pulls no punches yet remains smooth and controlled when required. Could not detect any problems with the power supply.
On the ML's you can clearly hear that it is superior to a Sony ES model HT amp's dac as well as an Oppo DV-980H.
I rate this a real bargain with great sound quality. It runs off a wallwart with no noticeable or audible problem but an upgrade path even so could be an improved power supply from Hi-Phibean or Rudi.
