Part of my hobby is restoring vintage audio/radio equipment, and for some very obscure & unknown reason, the Manufacturers of the period 70s/80s knew I would be doing this and so decided to make my life difficult. Sansui & Pioneer, and no doubt other Manufacturers, decided to use a ridiculous fuse-type globe for illumination purposes, rated at 8v at some 300mA.
Nobody in SA seems to stock these, so I ordered some from Germany. Great was my elation when they arrived, but suspiciously, they seemed to glow a lot brighter than the few original lamps I had, in spite of a slightly lower wattage rating at 250mW.
All the new globes I fitted popped
They seem to have been normal 6v types and not suitable for an 8v supply.
I have replaced them again with the incorrectly marked lamps, but have reduced the voltage by inserting a 1e 5w resistor in series with the AC feed. Not ideal, but it works.
People of Great Wisdom: Where might I get the original 8v lamps from?
