About DACs

Hi -

I have come to understand that when I use my analogue outputs on my dvd player, then the internal DAC is used(digital to analogue conversion). However, when I use the digital output on my dvd player then the internal DAC is bypassed(since there is no digital to analogue conversion happening), and I then feed this link into an external DAC or use my amp's internal DAC.

Am I mis-understanding the concept or is this correct?
