Advise please, all those who studied acoustic engineering...

I've moved my listening room to allow for late night sessions; but the "new" room (4m x 6m) has a bad flutter echo, even though fully carpeted.
I have a pair of ornamental rugs (each about 1m x 2m) to hang on the walls to damp the reflections, but on which walls will they work best?

Should the carpets go on the wall behind the loudpeakers, or on the wall behind the listener? Or one on each wall - diagonally placed?
Or is there no way to predict the best option without listening to both?

Carpets may not be ideal, but are about the only thing I can slip in 'under the radar' by pretending that their purpose it artistic and decor-enhancing.
