If at all possible when buying used, see if you can play with it first, even if just with LCR connected. A personal anedcote: I've had too many AVPs over the years to count, but it's the wrong side of 15. The best for just quality of the primary 6 channels, by a long shot, was a Meridian 568.2 but got upgraded when the lack of HDMI and urge for using newer surround formats won. This got replaced by a Marantz AV8801. It was a colossal disappointment, the transparency etc. I was used to was just not there (not in 2ch, surround only). On top of that, the issues with it not supporting the 4k 60Hz and the endless chase of extractor boxes made it a very unpleasant experience. During Covid boredom I hacked it up to hell and gone with plenty of upgrades (chronicled somewhere here) and it became rather good. Then last year I wanted Atmos and shelled out on an Anthem AVM70. I have no idea why but it's disappointing. Yes I have bells and whistles, sounds and measures very good (at least with PCM) but it sounds bland and compressed in 5.1 and all the way to 9.2.4 makes no difference to that. Same remainder of setup and never any EQ. I can't explain it but it's as if all the enjoyment is just sucked out. Actually all I just want is my Marantz or Meridian back :p
