I have been asked by our local Art Gallery (Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg) to give them input on the best upgrade their existing projector (Vivitek D966). Since this new projector will primarily be used for film and photographic images, I have been looking at home cinema rather than all-purpose units. But I have had trouble adjudicating between the different technologies: LCD technology (as found in Epson); LCoS technology (as found in Sony); of DLP (as found in Optoma).
I myself have only seen DLP projectors and will not be able to view the others in action. As usual, the internet is loaded with conflicting opinions. Has anyone out there had first-hand experience and, if so, what are your impressions?
I am aware of the importance of other criteria, but this is just about image quality. In that regard, these are the key parameters:
1. Controlled light environment
2. Screen size: 3360
3. Room a small 50 seater
4. Projector: ceiling installed
5. Usage: As above, primarily film; occasional presentation
6. Budget: R50-70k
7. Current possibilities (but no firm quotes): Sony VPL-HW40/45 ES; Epson EH-7300-9300; Optoma HD90+/91+
Any advice would be gratefully received.
