air conditioner advice

so i have cracked. air conditioning will be installed as it is just too damn hot here...

so my question here at the forum of all knowledge is whether anyone has any advice for me:
- anything to watch out for
- any recommended suppliers / installers / brands
- any anathema suppliers / installers / brands
- any tips regarding installation, etc

i'm guessing i will need around 18,000 btus (had one in my previous place which had a bigger area & it worked perfectly)
i would like to get one which works as a heater in winter as well.
