If I take the Yamaha DSP-AZ1 that's up on the forum as my av receiver ... then to get past the non-HDMI issue I'm thinking of a HDMI upscaling dvd player or blu-ray player to get picture to my LCD (sound via the DSP).  I enjoy the flexibility of the new AV receivers - front USB port, upscaling, network connection, etc.  but this way I can get most of the benefits cheaper.  To get past the fact that the DSP can't do this, can I connect a medial player to the DSP to compensate for this?  I'm figuring then that I almost have the equivalent of new technology:

  • Good amp for movies and good for stereo
HDMI picture definition for my LCD
Connectability of USB, HDMI sources, etc via a media player
Plus - Optional:
HDD for media storage
DAC - would this be overkill though?

My thinking is that if I do this, I will have the equivalent (not exact) of a god midrange av receiver.

What media player would you recommend?  Hoping to get away with R750-R1250.  There are quite a few WDTV media players in that price range, some with 500GB HDDD sold as a set for R1200.
