About 2 months back, I had a 30000km service on a Honda Civic and noted they replaced the pollen filter at a cost of R1092,00.  This is a flat plastic unit measuring 220 x 90 x 22mm with a concertina-folded cardboard insert similar in appearance to the air filter for the fuel system.  The actual air filter is slightly smaller, but much thicker at 110mm.

If you hold the old filter and a new filter up to the sun, you can see the same amount of light shining through, and aiming a blower at both of them, the throughput seems the same (obviously not a scientific test).  Anyway, its hardly high pressure air-flow for car ventilation

Friends Volvo also has a pollen filter, in fact 2, one at the front, a similar size to the Honda's, at R 1710,00 and a small one at the back in the centre console, about the same dimensions as an audio cassette.  This one is even more, at R1780,00

MasterParts in Claremont sell a pollen filter for a Honda for R330,00 but there is no equivalent for a Volvo.  This filter is made by some company in Malaysia and apart from the colour of the plastic surround, looks identical

It is a similar story for windscreen wipers, the cost of a generic replacement seems to be between 25% and 35% of the agents price.  I got the excuse "we have to keep parts in stock" from Honda, but the same applies to MasterParts does it not?
