Not to sure if I am wording my heading correctly, but here is my question :
I have a 30Watts RMS Technics micro component Hifi SE-HD350 , was one of their top of the range systems when new around R3500 12yrs ago. Its a superbly made amp all things considered and it has excellent headroom - it never distorts even if you drive it to its max volume.
I was using it with Paradigm Titans and now Paradigm Monitor 9 floor standers. I don't play music at very loud volumes so I haven't felt the need to get a bigger or better amp - half volume is normally fine so there is ample headroom.
But I could swear there was better presence and stereo imaging with the Titans , the Monitor 9's probably have more detail but it just doesn't seem to come together.
I have heard with some speakers esp the bigger floor standers like the monitor 9's you need a good size amp even at lower volumes to make sure there is always reserve headroom in the amp itself and the power supply for deep bass , very dynamic sections of music or just high energy music in general etc.
Currently I get no distortion but something is missing!
Do big speakers like the Monitor 9's only come to life at higher volumes when everything is really moving and getting dynamic?
Is my amp just never going to give enough juice to nicely power them whatever the volume?
What other things are there to consider in the amp/speaker relationship apart from just wattage numbers?
